Volunteer project: Bali Island is popular as the island of gods and is very famous for its culture and nature attractions. The project takes place in the western part of Bali, in Nusa Dua Regency. Unlike in the east where tourism is the main source of income, in the west there’s more rice farms and plantations, and fishing is a major activity. The busy seaport in Gilimanuk is the gateway that connects Bali and Java island through Bali sea. Most of the area is mountainous and consists of primary monsoon forest. The West Bali National Park has a total area of 19.000 ha and is an important place for conserving rare and endangered plants and animals.
We organize this volunteer project in order to support high schools and elementary schools in the western part of the island. We aim to meet the need of local students and teachers for improved communication and opportunities to interact with people from other countries. The volunteer will assist English teachers at school from 7 am to 2 pm, Monday to Friday.
The volunteer will teach the students basic English and introduce some English kids songs. The volunteer will be also involved in extracurricular activities with the children like cultural exchange, playing, sport, art, scouting, music and traditional dance.
Study theme: The volunteer will be introduced to the rich local culture and nature. They will interact with local people and will learn about the importance of local culture.
Leisure time: During free time, the volunteers will have the chance to visit diverse and exciting attractions in Jembrana and other parts of Bali, which are popular all over the world. The volunteers may visit beaches, temples, handicraft making centres and traditional markets.

For families who live in the city, the time for teaching their children is quite limited since the parents are busy working. Kindergarten is the early childhood formal educational level (under 6 years old). The Kindergarten curriculum is focused on the provision of educational stimulation to assist the growth and development of mind and body so that the children are ready to enter the next educational level. The kindergartens in Indonesia host children from 4 to 6 years old. The students are given lessons based on their level. The lessons aim to improve children’s creativity and raise their interest in learning though variety of approaches such as tact, values, social, religious, emotional, physical, motoric, cognitive, language, art, and independence. These schools are located in the urban setting of some cities such as Semarang, Salatiga, Makassar, Jepara, etc.
The volunteer will be teaching basic English by organizing games and entertaining activities for the children. This will include organizing sport activities, creating other activities that would enrich the children's skills, and helping in extra activities such as cooking, making compost, etc.

Volunteer project: In the recent years, the primary schools in Indonesia started developing some new programs. The International program is designed to facilitate the students who wish to employ English as their main language of communication in class. The regular class activities are Monday to Saturday, from 7 am to 1 pm. After 1 pm, the students are given choices to participate in some club activities provided by the school. There are sports, music, art, English club, Mathematics club, computers, boy scouts. The schools are located in the urban setting of some cities such as Semarang, Makassar, Salatiga, etc. The primary school system in Indonesia has 6 grades based on the ability and the age of the students. There are about 20 to 30 students in each class. The students are 6–12 years old.
The role of the volunteer will be assisting local teachers in holding basic English conversation classes. The volunteer is expected to motivate and encourage the students to practice their English skills. In addition, intercultural learning activities such as arts and music will be very much welcomed.

Volunteer project: The High School Education in Indonesia is divided into two educational levels: secondary (age 12–15) and senior high school (age 15–17). These schools are implementing the national curriculum standard as their compulsory activities. Therefore, the students take compulsory classes such as Math, science, languages, religion, physics, etc. In senior high school, the students are given more varied program such as science, social studies or language classes. The schools would like to collaborate with international volunteers to support their foreign language program. Moreover, the involvement of volunteers provides extra activities in order to boost students’ interest in music, art, sport and technology. Most of the schools are located in urban centers.
The role of the volunteer will be assisting local teachers in holding English language classes. The volunteer will motivate and encourage the students to practice the foreign language they are learning. Intercultural learning activities in the form of dialogue, music and games could give the students a better understanding of other countries and cultures.

This educational level is not merely about knowledge but also about other aspects such as character building. Teachers and parents are having important role in leading their children. In this level, raising discipline among students and growing understanding on the need of education are important. Furthermore, this is the time to prepare students of kindergartens for elementary level and to prepare students of elementary school for the higher level of education. The schools are located in the rural area and some of them are located on mountain slopes. Most of the students' parents are working in the private sector such as farming or trades, etc.

Volunteer project: Pesantren or Pondok Pesantren are Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia. The pesantren education system originated from traditional Javanese dormitories to learn religious philosophies. Pesantren have played a major role over the centuries. They emphasize core values of sincerity, simplicity, individual autonomy, solidarity and self-control. Young men and women are separated from their families, which contributes to a sense of individual commitment to the faith and close bonding to a teacher. Most pesantren provide dormitory living at low or no cost for the students. The students' activities start with an early morning prayer and end in the evening with a study group in the dormitory. During the day, the students attend formal school like any other students outside of pesantren (science, sport, English etc.). In the late afternoon and evening they have to attend religious studies. The pesantren has possible components such as traditional religious education, vocational skills training and character development. The project sites will be in Jepara and Gunungpati, both located in rural areas.
The role of the volunteers will be assisting local teachers in classes like organizing Basic English conversation, helping the teacher in giving training; motivating the students to study; organizing activities that will enrich the life skills of the students; getting involved in various other activities at the project site.

Most of madrasah provide low cost education, as the students are mostly coming from low to medium economic family background. The students attend formal school like other students outside of madrasah and they learn general subjects (science, sport, English, social studies, etc.). In the madrasah the students also study Koran and about Islam. The madrasah have possible components such as traditional religious education, vocational skills training and character development. The project sites will be in Elementary schools, Junior High and Senior High schools which are located mostly in rural areas in Central and East Java. The volunteer can choose the madrasah’s level based on their interest.

Volunteer project: The volunteers in this project will support private non-profit kindergarten schools located in crowded and slum areas of Semarang suburbs on the river side of Banjir Kanal Barat where floods are often. The schools serve children from the local community and help disadvantaged families who cannot afford to send their children to school. The main income of the villagers are from various sectors such working in factories, collecting stones or sands from the river, scavenging (garbage picking). In the schools, there are extra activities for the students such as making compost, making handicraft/souvenirs and cooking lessons. The students sell the items to churches, local community, and teachers from other schools, etc.
The role of the volunteer will be assisting a local teacher in holding simple English classes, playing with the kids, organizing events with the teachers, sharing and educating kids about hygiene, assisting kids in doing extracurricular activities (cooking, making handicrafts, etc.). Volunteer project: The project is organised in support of Schools for disabled children in Ungaran, Semarang, Bandung, Surabaya, Sumatera Island etc. Local staff provide care to the special needs students aged between 5 and 17 years old. Education classes start as early as kindergarten up to junior high-school. It also provides vocational training, sport, motor activities, drawing, making handicrafts, dance, etc. Some local volunteers also do regular activities with the school like sports, playing with the kids, and teaching them how to make some simple handicrafts. The project aim is to provide good quality education for disabled children and give them basic skills that hopefully will be useful in their future.
The volunteer will assist local teachers in conducting hands-on learning activities in order to stimulate children's motoric. The volunteer should be creative in planning activities. Moreover, the contact with international volunteers is an opportunity for the kids to learn about different cultures and countries as well as to learn simple English. Ungaran, Central Java 4 to 16 weeks
Volunteer project: Volunteers are needed in an elderly people home in Ungaran. There are 29 elderly women in the nursing home who live there supported by local staff. Some of the women are able to work and help with some duties in the home.
The role of the volunteer will be assisting local staff in taking care of the elderly people. The volunteer may work in shifts such as morning to afternoon and afternoon to evening. They will work to help the elderly in doing their daily activities such as cooking, meal time, arranging activities for them, or taking them for walks outside.

Taking care of orphaned and abandoned children in Semarang
Semarang, Central Java 4 to 8 weeks
Volunteer project: The project collaborates with two orphanages in Semarang City, Central Java, one of which is a female orphanage supported by the church community. The orphanages host children from different backgrounds and areas of Indonesia. Normally they are brought to the orphanage by the community or their own parents. Living harmony inside and outside of the orphanage is what the orphanages emphasize. The children are given responsibility into daily tasks from morning until evening, no matter the ages. At the moment, they are hosting children from 1 year old until 18 years old. After finishing high school, they are given the option for working or going to university. Normally the orphans will be no longer staying in the orphanage. Nevertheless, they still get basic life support from the orphanage until they can be independent financially. In working with the children, the caretakers teach them to take care of their fellow friends. So the kids would often help each other in doing their tasks. The orphanage also educates them to be independent through giving them entrepreneur skills and an opportunity to practice their skills. Nevertheless, formal education is the most important for all of them. They pray, play, learn, laugh, and support each other.
The volunteer will be assisting the caretakers in supervising the children. The volunteer will take part in their daily activities such as waking up the children, helping them in school preparation, creating activities in the free time, and learning school lessons. Moreover, the presence of volunteers could give them motivation for practicing their foreign language knowledge. Intercultural learning in the form of dialogue, music and games could give the students a better understanding of other countries and cultures.

Japanese Language and Culture program
Central and West Java 4 to 16 weeks
Volunteer project: Japanese language and culture have entered Indonesian education curriculum in the recent years. Japanese language and culture start being introduced for High School students. In this level, they learn basic Japanese language such as greeting, vocabulary and constructing simple sentences. Besides that, they also learn about the culture. Sometimes, the school organises a Japanese culture festival in the end of the year. In university level, it has become major of studies. Students in the language department are also given the option to learn Japanese language and culture as their minor studies. The language is getting famous and wide spread taught all over Indonesian schools. Many Japanese investors invest their share in Indonesia. Japanese companies are easily found in here. For graduate students from either senior high school or university, it will be an additional value to hold a Japanese language certificate.
The Japanese Language and Culture program is a combination of some high schools and universities in Central Java. In high school level, Japanese language classes are given once a week for 2 hours. In university which has Japanese language and culture major, the students learn deeper the language, such as grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, history, art, Japanese letter, etc.

French Language and Culture program
Central Java 4 to 16 weeks
Volunteer project: The French Language and Culture will take place in High Schools or Universities which have French as a subject. French is quite a new major for Indonesian universities. Therefore, this project aims to promote formal education and learning, assist local French teachers, and stimulate intercultural learning.
Volunteers are needed to assist local teachers in holding French language classes. The volunteer is expected to motivate and encourage the students to practice their French. Intercultural learning activities in the form of dialogue, music and games could give the students a better understanding of other countries and cultures.

Volunteer project: National private schools in Indonesia have put Mandarin in their curriculum. In those schools, Mandarin is taught from kindergarten level. Mandarin language and culture project is a combination between High Schools and University.
