Volunteer in Mongolia
There are currently no openings for short-term projects in Mongolia. New volunteer projects will be announced here when available. To get an idea of what kind of programs are expected, you can check some of the past projects below.

Teaching English to students in Ulaanbaatar
Ulaanbaatar

Volunteer project: The project is organized with one of the secondary schools in a suburb of Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. The country has a 12-year school system. Until 1990, students used to study Russian only as a second language, but since 1990 they have the chance to study other languages as well. However, the quality of English language teaching still needs improvement.

The volunteers' main task will be to teach English to the students. This could also be done through informal activities such as singing songs, playing games, etc. The group will also help with some renovation works in the school. We may also do some workshops with the children on environmental awareness and forest protection.

Planting trees in Mongolia
Buhug

Volunteer project: Deforestation is a serious problem in Mongolia. Before 1990, forests covered 10% of the country, but only 7% today. This is caused by uncontrolled tree cutting, forest fires and global warming. On the other hand, it takes a long time for trees to grow, and May and mid-October are the only times for planting trees in Mongolia.

Volunteers in this project will plant trees in several areas around Ulaanbaatar and Buhug river. There's increase in reforestation activities by some organizations but it takes many years for trees to grow, so we'll also join this movement.

Special requirements: Participants are expected to like planting work and simple nomadic life.

Language: English

Leisure time: Cultural exchange program, excursions, etc.

Accommodation: A house or Ger (traditional Mongolian tent).

Developing an orphanage garden and eco-farm training center
Buhug

Volunteer project: Since 2000, volunteers from all over the world have been participating in summer programs designed to improve the vegetable garden of an orphanage and a small eco-farm at Buhug River. During the last years, we focused more on improving the facilities, and not much on the farming methods. The way it's been done, farming and cultivating was not really productive and eco-friendly. Farmers in the area also face the same challenges. Despite the hard work farmers put in, the crop yields are low.

The aim of this project is to help improve the orphanage's garden and to develop the farm as a training center for eco-farming, where local people can learn basic but important eco-farming methods and practices. The goal is to achieve the biggest harvest with the most effective methods for using the limited land. Volunteers will work in the vegetable garden and develop the eco-farming training center. Vegetables from the eco-farm will be donated to poor and low income local families.

Volunteers in the first project (May 19-June 1) will be planting vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, radishes, etc. They will be also making water canals for the farm, making compost, etc.
In the next projects, volunteers will be helping in the orphanage's garden and the eco-farm, and their main tasks will be removing weeds in the field, working in the greenhouse, making water canals, making compost, etc.

Special requirements: Participants are expected to like farming/physical work and be flexible and adaptable.

Renovating a farm campsite by the Buhug river
Buhug

Volunteer project: The project site is a base camp for volunteers and a vegetable farm. Vegetables grown on the farm are donated to low income families from the suburbs of Ulaanbaatar. International volunteer groups have been involved in the development of the site since 2001. In the past years, volunteers have built houses and planted trees there. This year, we are planning to continue our work to develop the campsite.

The volunteers will work on renovation and construction tasks at the camp. This will most probably involve painting houses and some small construction projects. Some repair work may be needed inside the houses. Volunteers are expected to be ready for different kinds of construction or some agricultural work.

Special requirements: Participants should like construction work and simple nomadic life.

Language: English

Leisure time: Cultural exchange program, excursions, etc.

Accommodation: Summer house or Ger (traditional Mongolian tent).

Location: The project site is located 40 km from Ulaanbaatar, in a beautiful hilly area where one can experience the real nomadic lifestyle. The temperature is about 15-25 C, but sudden changes in weather can be expected. It's mostly sunny, sometimes rainy and windy. One third of the population of the country (3.1 million) lives in the capital city Ulaanbaatar.

Summer camp for Mongolian children

Volunteer project: Before 1990, there were many children's summer camps in Mongolia where kids were spending their summer holidays living and learning in nature. Summer camp is something very special for Mongolian children. In the past years, due to the economic situation, it became difficult to run summer camps. Now just a few children's summer camps are still running their activities.

Volunteers in this project will help running a summer camp for children at Khadgait. The volunteers will organize English classes and different cultural and sport activities with the kids. The group will also help with some construction work to improve the children's camp.
