Volunteer opportunities in SPAIN

Archaeological excavations at the Iberian fortress Turo de Montgros
El Brull, Osona          June 28 - July 12, 2014

Volunteer project: The project takes place in the Turò de Montgròs, an Iberian fortress located in the Montseny Natural Park. The objectives of the project are to excavate and help maintain the archeological site and at the same time learn about and appreciate the richness of the natural environment.

Volunteers will be involved in:
- Excavation and extraction of land to expose various sectors of the fortress;
- Drawing different stratigraphic sections and preparing files on the retrieved objects;
- Cleaning, sifting and classifying the objects found;
- Maintenance tasks in the forest surrounding the archeological site.

The volunteers will also organise a guided visit to the fortress for the young people from the village, explaining them about the site and about the international volunteer workcamps.

Free time activities: Volunteers will have a wide range of free time activities in the afternoon and in the evening. The aim is to improve group relationships and venture into the area of human values. There will be an opportunity to visit the region and appreciate the rich nature of the Montseny Nature Park. The volunteers will also produce articles and files about these visits.

Accommodation: In a rural tourist house. There are 8 double rooms, each one with its own bathroom. There are also two common rooms with TV area, library, dining room, a fully equipped kitchen, washing machine, and free Wi-Fi.

Research and preservation of paleontological and geological sites in Pallars
Tremp, Pallars Jussà          June 28 - July 12, 2014

Volunteer project: Some 65 million years ago, in the late Cretaceous period, Pallars Jussa was a marine landscape. The collision of tectonic plates forced the elevation of the Pyrenees, which led to dramatic changes. Today at Pallars you can follow the transformation process the Earth underwent millions of years ago. In fact, the region is known as one of the best areas in Europe for paleontological and geological site seeing and studying the ecosystems from the end of the dinosaur era.

The volunteer project takes place in Vilamtijana, a small village located 4 km from Tremp. The objectives of the project are to do a research and to promote campaigns in the geological sites, and to protect the natural environment surrounding the Noguera Pallaressa river.

The volunteers will be working on:
- Excavation in the paleontological site of Nerets Cave;
- Maintenance and signposting work in the geological site at Fígols de Tremp;
- Maintenance of the lookout of Puigcercòs's geological site;
- Continuing the reconstruction of the Medieval path to the Orcau site;
- Clearing and maintaining the Noguera Pallaresa river and its surroundings.
This project is ideal for mountain and nature lovers!

Free time activities: Volunteers will have a wide range of free time activities that aim to improve group relationships and venture into the area of human values.
There will be different activities to discover the cultural reality of the Catalan region: two-day trip with a sleepover in nature, one-day trip to the capital of the province, Lleida, a canoeing activity and a visit to a cave.

Accommodation: In Vilamitjana, 4 km far from Tremp, in a classroom with common showers and bathroom. Bunk beds and mattresses are provided. There will also be two big tents to use as a dining room.

Building a trail and exploring rural life in a Catalan village
Gerb, La Noguera          June 30 - July 14, 2014

Volunteer project: The purpose of this workcamp is to involve international participants and local people of Gerb in a common project for the restoration and enhancement of the village and it surroundings. The volunteers will be introduced to the daily life of a Catalan village.

The group will work on the construction and signposting of a little path that goes from the village water tank to the top of the hill, where the old castle used to be. They will also clean the overgrowth of the abandoned and ruined houses.

Free time activities: Communication and recycling activities, traditional games from each country, one activity with the kids of the village, cultural excursions to Gerb and its surroundings, visit to Balaguer and the market, one night excursion. Two-day excursion from La Pobla to Vilanova de la Sal, sleeping in a shelter. There will be one excursion to the top of the Pica Roja Mountain to enjoy the view.

Accommodation: In the sports centre of the village. The participants will sleep on mattresses. Free entrance to the municipal swimming pool, close to the sports centre.

Archaeological excavations at the medieval Castle of Montsoriu
Arbucies, La Selva          July 1 - July 15, 2014

Volunteer project: The castle of Montsoriu is an example of original gothic architecture in Catalonia. The Council of Arbucies has been working for its restoration for several years now, as a means to give value to its local heritage.

The international volunteers will be involved in archaeological excavation in the area of the castle Montsoriu and subsequent cleaning and sorting, guided by archaeologists. The work will consist of moving rocks, rubble and soil to clean the space and lower the ground level to the original floor of the castle. In the process, the participants can find archaeological ceramic, metal, glass or architectural objects. There will be also tasks of cleaning and classification of the remains found during excavations. It is a heavy work but very rewarding, encouraging teamwork, and can be adapted to each person's abilities. The volunteers will be guided by professional archaeologists at all times.

On weekends, the group will move to Arbucies and there will be a one-day excursion to the coast.

Free time activities: The group leaders will offer various leisure activities in the afternoons and evenings and are always open to volunteers' ideas and suggestions. Possible free time activities are visits to the castle, information talks, workshops, history, cultural exchange, gastronomy, astronomy ... Two trips are planned to the villages of Breda and Tossa.

Accommodation: During the week, the accommodation will be in the castle, in a room with bunk beds. On weekends, the group will be accommodated in a municipal building in Arbucies. It is a dance hall at the municipal sports center but does not have beds, so we ask participants to bring sleeping bags and mats.

Location: Arbúcies, province of Girona. Montsoriu Castle is located in the Natural Park of Montseny, UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, 12 km from the village of Arbúcies and very close to the Costa Brava. It is a unique example of the military medieval architecture in Catalonia.

Archeological excavations at the prehistoric cave Can Sadurni
Begues, Baix Llobregat          July 6 - July 20, 2014

Volunteer project: This is an archeological project which will take place in the Cave Can Sadurni in the town of Begues. Volunteers will work on the excavations of various sectors of the cave of Can Sadurni. They will have the opportunity to discover other excavations and the beautiful region of Garraf.

The general objectives of the project include learning the main techniques of archaeological excavation, raising awareness about the importance of excavations, to analyze, interpret and define hypotheses concerning the prehistory and history.
During the workcamp, the volunteers will:
- Do excavation and extraction activities, explore different sectors of the Can Sadurni cave, and prepare the excavation of the main entrance to the cave.
- Participate in drawing stratigraphic sections and writing data of the pieces found, recover some heritage elements of dry stone from the surroundings of Mas Can Sadurni.
- Carry out the washing, classification and inventory, related to the archaeological material (pottery, metal, animals) found during the excavation.
- Start the construction of a Neolithic cabin on the outside terrace of the cave.
- Contribute to the maintenance of the surroundings and improve access to the cave.

Free time activities: Volunteers will have a wide range of afternoon activities and games that aim to improve the group relationships and enter into the area of human values. There will be the opportunity to visit the region and take the most of its rich culture: overnight excursion to Garraf Natural Park, trip to Barcelona (one-day visit), theatre performance open to the entire population of Begues (the last evening, a play will be done to present the historical aspects of the cave from the findings), farewell party with the technical team and mayors.

Accommodation: In the sports centre of the village school, mattresses are provided. The meals are catered for and access to the municipal swimming pool is provided.

Help in the organization and running of the International Music Festival of Cantonigros
Vic, Osona          July 10 - July 24, 2014

Volunteer project: The Music festival of Cantonigròs is a great event which attracts around 2.000 people, both audience and participants to enjoy traditional music and dances. During this festival, musicians from 30 different countries are performing, so it is a great intercultural experience!
The international volunteers will be involved in the technical organization of the festival and will have the opportunity to discover the Catalan popular culture from the shared experiences between volunteers, organizers of the festival and performers. The Festival has been organized since 1983. Bands, choral groups, and folk dances participate in the festival, and it is now part of the European Festivals Association.

Volunteers will work before, during and after the festival. The technical tasks are:
- Assembly and dismantling of the structures, facilities and area of the festival
- Support for the festival's services (shop, kitchen, etc.)
- Support in logistics
- Controlling the access to the events during the festival.
The working hours are flexible, and depend on the arrival of the festival participants and the logistics. The volunteers will work in small groups.

Special requirements: Motivation letter is required with application.

Free time activities: At the beginning of the project, the festival will have not started yet. The participants will have time to get to know each other, and the organizers will explain the tasks you'll have during the festival. You will get to know the surroundings and the area with the help of the locals. Excursions and guided visits to nearby towns and villages (Vic, Tavertet, Rupit) will be organised. There will be also leisure time activities, where the volunteers will learn different games and workshops promoting group cohesion, motivation, cultural exchange among participants, discussions.

Accommodation: In a local school. Please, bring your sleeping bag and mat.

Location: Cantonigròs is a village situated at the top of a mountain at a height of 1.000 metres, in the region of Osona (Vic is the main city) in the centre of Catalunya, and 100 km far from the city of Barcelona (south) and the French border (north).

Recovery of the archaeological heritage of Peramola
Peramola, Alt Urgell          July 13 - July 27, 2014

Volunteer project: In the town of Peramola, there are about 15 prehistoric sites and it's important to recover the prehistoric archaeological heritage. The international workcamp is part of a long-term project supported by the City of Peramola, local teachers and the Regional Council of Alt Urgell. This year is the second edition of the project, and the main activities will be continuation of the work started last year.

Apart from the technical tasks, the volunteers will discover and enjoy community life with local people through workshops and activities in the afternoon and evening. The village of Peramola has a population of 300, and an international volunteer project can be a very positive experience, both for the participants to experience living in rural areas, but also for the people to interact with volunteers from around the world.

The volunteers will be surveying and mapping the sites using GPS, map, and other instruments. They will also work on the database and interpretation of the objects found in the sites, design information posters, take pictures, organise workshops about experimental archeology and create a blog.

Free time activities: Workshops on “Gegants i Bastoners” (a cultural tradition of Catalonia), preparation of a workshop about archeology for the kids of the village, a trip to Pedro dels Quatre Batlles, visit to Barcelona, visit to the Dinosaur Museum and to Seu d’Urgell village, exchange with local associations, participation in a popular dinner, exchange activity with people from different generations.

Accommodation: In a farmhouse in Peramola, rooms with beds for 3-4 people. You will need a sleeping bag.

Restoration, awareness and cultural activities in fire devastated areas of Central Catalonia
Pinos, Solsonès          July 13 - July 27, 2014

Volunteer project: After the devastating fire in Central Catalonia and Solsonès in 1998, a great damage was caused. This social and environmental project was born in order to restore the area affected by the fire and spread awareness about care of the local environment. The objectives of the project are: to understand the reality of rural and social life of the area, to do specific actions to protect the environmental area, to promote contact and exchange with the local population.

Participants will work on the geographical center “Rosa dels Vents” on maintenance, reconstruction and cleaning tasks. They will also work on the interpretation center of Pinós. The volunteers will clean up the fountain at the Miracle Sanctuary. The group will organize, once a week, activities with the children of the village, and participate in excursions to explore the natural surroundings and truly understand the rural way of life. There will also be a multicultural popular dinner.

Restore the natural environment and dig into history at the banks of Boella River
La Canonja, Tarragona          July 13 - July 27, 2014

Volunteer project: This international volunteer project takes place at Boella River, La Canonja, in the province of Tarragona. The main objective of the project is to restore and recover the natural surroundings of Boella’s torrent (la Riera).

The volunteers' tasks include:
- Removing vegetation which is invading the torrent area;
- Reforestation of the riparian environment;
- Maintenance of the banks and the slopes;
- Arranging access to the torrent’s area and installation of information signs;
- Collaboration in the archaeological actions taking place in the torrent’s area.

Free time activities: Tours and excursions to different sites in the surroundings (natural places, villages, cities, etc.), visits to the cities of Tarragona and Reus and exploring their cultural and historic patrimony, hiking in the Muntanyes de Prades, as well as the coastal natural area Tamarit-Punta de la Móra. Archaeological excavations at the Formos castle in Balaguer
Balaguer, La Noguera          July 16 - July 30, 2014

Volunteer project: This is an archaeology project in the medieval walled city of Balaguer. Located between the plain and mountains of Lleida, close to the Segre River, the city has a rich cultural and historical heritage. In this project, the volunteers will experience the reality of everyday life in a Catalonia, will get to know the country and the region, the monuments, the history, the landscapes and the Catalan culture.

The volunteer work consists in archaeological excavations at Castell Formós de Balager. The castle was the palace of the Counts of Urgell in the 12th century. Participants will learn about the techniques of excavation, dating, cleaning and marking the recovered objects. The technical work will be coordinated by the Regional Museum Comarcal de la Noguera.

Free time activities: Welcome dinner party with the associations of the city, cultural visit to Balaguer with local guides, participation in activities organized by the city associations. Excursions, workshops, cultural and environmental activities in the afternoons. Traditional camp games and parties in the evening. Cultural outings: Night out at Mor-Mur and cultural tour to Balaguer, outing to the monastery “de les Franqueses”. Two-day excursion from La Pobla to Vilanova de la Sal. There will be also one excursion to the top of the Pica Roja Mountain to enjoy the view.

Accommodation: In a school building in the city. Volunteers will sleep on mattresses in the gym. Multipurpose room is available for meetings and workshops. Volunteers will have access to the town’s swimming pool near the school.

Restoration of the ruins of the ancient Iscle Castle
Vidreres, La Selva          July 27 - August 10, 2014

Volunteer project: The Iscle Castle is situated in Vidreres, a town of the XII century. The castle is a historical patrimony of big importance in Catalonia, that has been abandoned for many years. There is the will to recover the castle in order to re-establish its value as it has played a great historical role in the past. The project aims to establish intercultural relations among international volunteers and locals from Vidreres by organizing several cultural and popular events.

The process of recovery of the castle and the chapel of St. Iscle is divided in full archaeological excavation, its restoration and rehabilitation and its subsequent management and public promotion. The international team of volunteers will help with restoration activities at the remaining parts of the castle. Participants will be provided with the necessary tools and our archaeologists will explain the basic techniques about the restoration of ruins.
Participants in this project will have the opportunity to learn and share experiences with people from different countries from around the world, to gain archeological and cultural knowledge, and to appreciate the natural environment.

Free time activities: Cultural excursions (Girona, Barcelona, Lloret de Mar and Costa Brava). Many activities in the village (gymkhanas, film forum, visits to the market…), meetings with the villagers.

Accommodation: In a local school, in the gym, equipped with bunk beds, mattresses and cabinets for all participants. The municipal swimming pool is just in front of the school. Meals will be served at the school canteen and prepared by a professional cook.

Location: Vidreres, La Selva (Girona), near the Costa Brava. Because of its proximity to Lloret de Mar, Vidreres has become a very touristic town.

Protecting the Requesens Castle and promoting responsible tourist access
La Jonquera, Alt Empordà          July 30 - August 13, 2014

Volunteer project: Requesens Castle is very well known, both in a good and a bad sense. Although it is a spectacular castle that seems taken from a fairy tale, it is not very well maintained. There are a lot of damages caused by irresponsible visitors. This will be the first year of a long term project. The tasks of the first phase will be related to prevention actions like cleaning or signposting. The objectives of the project include: living together, sharing and respecting different social and cultural realities in the spirit of integration, cooperation and sustainability.

The work is focused on prevention, cleaning the area and promoting good use of the castle. Some of the specific tasks will be: designing the route around the castle, creating a document in different languages for future visitors' use, preparing the audio guides information, preparing and distributing QR codes, cleaning the garden area, cleaning the church in order to celebrate there a promotional act about the need of maintenance and recovery of the patrimony, cleaning the degraded areas and restoring the most broken walls.

Free time activities: Walks in the natural surroundings to learn about animal and plant species; botany workshop; bird watching; talks about the natural and ecological heritage; aquatic activities (canoeing and sailing) in Port de la Selva; visit to the turtle reproduction center; learning to work with cork; guided visit to St Ferran Castle; 3-day excursion from Port de la Selva to Cap de Creus arriving on the beach and half-day visit to Figueres and Dalí Museum.

Accommodation: It will be mainly in a temporary camp site located in the exterior part of the castle. Sleeping in tents. The kitchen and the dining room will be located in one of the rooms of the castle. Participants will take shower in the river situated almost 30 minutes walking from the castle. There will be also a sports centre in Cantallops (30 minutes by car) with showers and space to sleep, to go in specific days.

Location: La Jonquera is a municipality in the comarca of l'Alt Empordà, in the province of Girona in Catalonia. It is located next to the border with France.

Restoration of traditional ovens in the medieval town of Algerri
Algerri, Noguera          August 1 - August 15, 2014

Volunteer project: The aim of the volunteer project in Algerri is restoration of the local heritage of the town. In the past years, international volunteer teams have worked for the recovery of various sites in the town: the castle, the chapel, parks and streams.

This summer, we will begin a new project in Algerri, centered around the great tradition of gypsum in the region that was used to make the plastering of oven constructions. The volunteers will start the restoration of the three traditional ovens in Algerri and the first task will be the clean up operation.
The project will also introduce participants to the reality of Catalan people's daily life, their country and region, their monuments, culture, history and landscape.

Free time activities: Volunteers will visit beautiful places in the region. There will also be integration events such as welcome dinner party, visit with local guides, popular games, chats with locals, games with children, and a lot more. Cultural outings: tour around Serra Llarga, cultural visit to Algerri, outing to the Cervoles's hermitage with a tractor, visit to Balaguer and its market, night out in Serra Llarga.

Accommodation: In the multipurpose room of a community building, sleeping on mattresses. There are showers in the municipal pool, which will be accessible to the volunteers.

Location: Algerri, in the province of Lleida, in a rural area of Catalunya. Its inhabitants are called "algerrians". It is located in the Noguera Baixa region. The area is crossed by the Segre River and is closed to the North by the Pyrenees. The place, with its nature and beauty, is a delight for the hiking lovers.

Reviving the artisanal craft of winemaking in the Iberian citadel of Calafell
Calafell, Baix Penedés          August 16 - August 30, 2014

Volunteer project: The Iberian Citadel of Calafell is the first archaeological site in Spain which was partly reconstructed through experimental archaeology techniques. Since 1995, the Citadel is an archaeological open-air museum, giving a vision of how an Iberian fortification could have been like in the Iron Age. After a temporary closure in 2007-2008, a new course of action was set towards placing the archaeological site as a point of reference in the European framework of this kind of outdoor museums and at the same time aiming to make the Ciutadella a pioneer in the experimental research of the Iberian world. The volunteers in this workcamp will learn about Iberian history, architecture and antic ways of building with earth.

A new project on experimental archaeology at the Iberian Citadel of Calafell has proposed to start artisanal production of wine by archeological evidences. The specific tasks for the volunteers will consist in creating a wine press, a place to tread grapes and producing must for depositing in ceramic containers.

Free time activities: Games, trips to the beach, excursions to Tarragona (visiting the Roman part) and Barcelona (the Gothic part), workshops (relaxation, handicrafts, etc.), intercultural evenings, activities with the youngsters of the town (sports, etc.).
This project has a special focus on heritage preservation and activities related to Catalan World Heritage, such as castellers (human towers) and an excursion to the Roman part of Tarragona.

Accommodation: In the gym of the high school of Calafell. Mattresses will be provided. You need to bring a sleeping bag.

Restoration and preservation of the Castle of Sant Ferran
Figueres, Alt Empordà          August 16 - August 30, 2014

Volunteer project: The Sant Ferran Castle (Castell de Sant Ferran) is situated on a hill in Figueres at the end of Pujada del Castell. It is a large military fortress built in the 18th century under the orders of several military engineers. Sant Ferran Castle is one of the most important monuments in Catalonia because of its majestic size and history.

The international volunteer project aims to restore the historic and natural heritage of the St. Ferran Castle and its surroundings, and develop the knowledge and relevance of such heritage. Volunteers' tasks consist in:
- Recovery of the foundations;
- Elimination of the irrigation canals;
- Clearing and cleaning of various moats;
- Repairing the paths surrounding the moats;
- Cleaning and adjusting mine tunnels;
The work will be in the mornings.

Free time activities: There are a number of activities to help you understand and get to know the local area and its environment and heritage: cultural visits, activities with Catalan Castellers and Diables (typical Catalan cultural activities), workshops, sailing and canoeing, etc. There will be a weekend excursion to Cap de Creus and Cadaques, and a day visit to Figueres and the Dalí museum.

Accommodation: In one of the rooms of the castle, in bunk beds. Very simple living conditions.

Location: Castell de Sant Ferran – Figueres, Alt Empordà, in the province of Girona. The town is the birthplace of artist Salvador Dali.
