Tasks to be carried out by the volunteer
group: Language: English Free time activities: In the spare time, volunteers will visit belvederes, castles, historical villages (Marialva), Vale do Côa engraving and Douro Wine Region (UNESCO Patrimonies). There will also be a visit to the Museum of Bread in Seia and the Mountain of the Estrela. Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in a Youth Centre, composed of 2 dormitories and 8 rooms. Environmental
work at the banks of Macas river Volunteer project: The project partner is a local association involved in cultural and sports activities, prevention of forest fires, holidays in motion, support the creation of a shelter on the Pilgrims Way to Santiago, support of the parish festivities, youth activities, international field work, etc. The specific tasks for the volunteer group are to clean the banks of the river Maçãs, signposting the pathway of Santiago, preservation of mills, touristic and environmental tours, meetings with the local community, cleaning up trash. Language: English Free time activities: Kayaks, walks, trips to the frontier villages between Portugal and Spain, debates on the river Maças, ending with a meeting at the waterfront of the river. Accommodation: In mountain shelters and in camping tents Location: The location is in the north of Portugal, in the Northeast of Trás-os-Montes, near the province of Zamora (Spain) in the county and district of Bragança, Natural Park of Montesinho, village and parish of Quintanilha and the river of Maçãs (at the border with Spain). Reimagining
solidarity Volunteer project: Action for Justice and Peace is an association that has as objective to build a culture of peace, based on the rights of all persons, on inclusive and participative democracy, on social and cognitive justice and in an environment that is able to give and preserve life. Their mission is to promote dialogues on feminism, peace and demilitarization, to strengthen actions against poverty and violence, to develop counter-hegemonic bonds between the local and the global. The association works in the following areas: Equality of Opportunities and Parity; Human Rights Training and Education; Community Development and Solidarity Alternatives; Voluntary Work; Participation in Networks and Platforms; Production of alternative knowledge. The volunteers will support the local association centre with painting, re-buildinging; promoting a local festival – music, dance, food; promoting a “Social Market” as a social and solidary economic alternative; promoting intercultural interaction; cleaning streets. Language: English Free time activities: Time will be taken to visit the region, namely the city of Coimbra and the beach of Figueira-da-Foz, as well as the city of Oporto. Preserving
the rural and cultural heritage in Faia Brava Reserve Volunteer project: The project is organized in cooperation with an environment NGO, created in 2000 at Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Guarda district, Portugal. Their mission is the conservation of the Riba-Côa natural heritage. To achieve this goal, the objectives are the study and conservation of flora and fauna of the Côa, Águeda and Douro watersheds, environmental education, development of sustainable rural development projects, and the recovery and promotion of the cultural and architectural heritage of the region. Their main project, the Faia Brava Reserve, at the Côa Valley SPA, is a 600 ha property, managed exclusively for nature and culture heritage conservation. The goal of this volunteer project is to support the inventory and recovery of abandoned rural structures and constructions, as well as the compilation of local stories and knowledge, for the development of ecotourism activities at the Faia Brava Reserve. The participants will receive theoretical and practical information from specialists on rural architecture inventory and recovery methodologies, and will take part in practical inventory work. Reconstruction fieldwork will also be done on rural houses, sheds, stonewalls and traditional roofs, as well as the marking of theme nature trails, which will allow tourists to visit rediscovered and recovered rural heritage. Language: English Free time activities: On evenings and days off, the volunteers will have the opportunity to discover the region, through guided visits to rock art sites at the Côa Valley Archaeological Park, bird watching activities, traditional music and rural activity evenings, with the support of the local population. Accommodation: Rented house at the closest village. The house is fully equipped with kitchen, bathroom and bunk bed rooms. The village has a small supermarket and café. Transport to the nearest town will be offered for groceries, pharmacy, etc. Location: The Algodres village is located 14 km from Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo (Guarda). The fieldwork will be done at the Faia Brava Reserve, 4 km away from the village. Terminal: Vila Nova de Foz Côa

Rebuilding

The international volunteers will rebuild and paint the surroundings of the church square and will participate in a traditional folklore festival. The group will also take part in the promotion of intercultural interaction and an educational tour with the community. Preserving
the
natural and cultural patrimony of Lousa Volunteer project: Lousã Association for Cooperation was established in 2000 with the main objective to support local community. Now the association carries out a lot of projects including youth participation project, children’s leisure time project and trainings for unemployed people. It’s the 3rd year that an international volunteer project will take place in Lousã.
The project's theme is related to
environment and cultural patrimony and the general objective is to
sensitize the community, citizens and institutions for the importance of
Lousã patrimony preservation and invigoration. Language: English Free time activities: Visiting a water mill, visit to Coimbra and the university, going to the beach, visiting old villages, etc. Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in a youth hostel. Location: Lousã Terminal: Lousã
