Volunteer in Mongolia

Developing an eco-farm and training center
Buhug       August 18 - August 31, 2017

Volunteer project: Since 2000, volunteers from all over the world have been participating in summer programs designed to improve the vegetable farm at Buhug River. During the last years, we focused more on improving the facilities, and not much on the farming methods. The way it's been done, farming and cultivating was not really productive and eco-friendly. Farmers in the area also face the same challenges. Despite the hard work farmers put in, the crop yields are low.

The aim of this project is to develop the farm as a training center for eco-farming, where local people can learn basic but important eco-farming methods and practices. The goal is to achieve the biggest harvest with the most effective methods for using the limited land. Volunteers will work in the vegetable eco-farm and develop the eco-farming training center. Vegetables from the eco-farm will be donated to poor and low income local families.

Volunteers' main tasks will be removing weeds in the field, working in the greenhouse, making water canals for the farm, making compost, etc.

Teaching English to students in Ulaanbaatar
Ulaanbaatar       3 projects of 2 wks in September and October

Volunteer project: The project is organized with one of the secondary schools in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. The country has a 12-year school system. Until 1990, students used to study Russian only as a second language, but since 1990 they have the chance to study other languages as well. However, the quality of English language teaching still needs improvement.

The volunteers' main task will be to teach English to the students. This could also be done through informal activities such as singing songs, playing games, etc. The group will also help with some renovation works in the school. We may also do some workshops with the children on environmental awareness and forest protection.
