Volunteer in Ghana

Teaching and taking care of orphans
Akwapim       June 30 - July 21, 2017

Volunteer project: The project is organized in partnership with the staff of an orphanage home in the Eastern Region of Ghana. The home was established 13 years ago to take care of the growing number of neglected and abandoned children in the region. Today the orphanage hosts 38 children (18 boys and 20 girls). Their ages range from 8 to 16 years.

The main goal of this project is to provide assistance and help the kids have a childhood like any other child. To achieve this, more personnel per child is needed so that more time could be devoted to each child. This will also enable the staff to identify and develop children’s talents to benefit both the children and the society at large.

Volunteers will be teaching at the preschool level (alphabet, numbers, English language, Math, Rhymes, Poems, Songs and Arts & Dance). In the afternoon, the volunteers will help the kids with their homework. The volunteers will also help with HIV awareness, sexual education, health and hygiene programs. In the evenings, the volunteers are welcome to participate in cultural activities, drumming and dancing, storytelling, etc. The volunteers may also help with some construction tasks. The work activities start at 7 am and end at 2 pm.

Special requirements: Volunteers should be able to teach and take care of children.

Leisure time: Volunteers can go to Tutu Township for a walk. Another opportunity is to visit the Aburi Botanical Garden which is just 10 km from the home. He is a fetish priest who commanded the golden stool from the skies which is the symbol of unity for the people of Ashanti in Ghana.

Accommodation: Volunteers will be hosted at the home. Beds with mattresses are available.
