Volunteer project: The Hessian Brick Museum (Ziegeleimuseum) needs your help! Here, where roofing tiles and stones were made for over 100 years, you will be helping to build an area where others can experience the history behind this old factory. A dark pathway, a barefoot path, and a sound/music area are just a few of the 40 stations which will make up the museum’s latest exhibit, called the “Sinnesgänge”. This will be both inside and around the oven. In order to make this happen, the oven room needs to be washed and the window cleaned and repanned. Mountain experience in Chiemgau
       Baireralm & Steinbergalm, Bavaria          July 25 - August 19, 2010

Volunteer project: Have you ever wanted to know what alpine farmers do and what dairy farmers live from June till September? A big goal is to maintain the typical landscape of the Alps by planting fields with typical plants and encouraging typical animals to live here. You will be taking wood that groups cut last year and burning it. You will then be taking small trees and bushes and pinching them off. If time remains, you will help build a system to provide water to the animals. The Alps serve as a home for cattle and other plants and animals, and the goal is to maintain this habitat and their lifestyle here. You will be spending eight days on the Baireralm and then go to the Steinbergalm for another eight days. The work may become physically challenging at times.

Special note: This is a project for nature lovers! You will be living in alpine huts at 1000 m and 1200 meters in the middle of the mountains, a one to two hour walk into the Tal. There is no electricity, however you may use candles.

Leisure time: Here you have the perfect chance to experience a life away from civilization. Feel free to go for hikes through the Alps, where you can rest your feet by dipping them in streams. During the evenings you can sit around a campfire and gaze at the stars. On weekends you can travel to Chiemsee, Salzburg, or Munich. The farmers will help you with providing food and transport to and from the mountain. There is a path for the transport, so you won’t have to haul your luggage up the mountains. Steinbergalm is only accessible by four wheel drive vehicles.
For the weekend of July 31/August 1, you can go to the Tal so you can enjoy the view and take a long hike to explore the area. Since you will be switching mountains, the weekend in between (August 6-8) can be used for a big trip, since you will be off the mountain and can travel to Munich or Austria. During the last weekend, you can take a trip to Chiemsee. From the Steinbergalm a cablecar is a half hour walk away which will take you to Aschau where you can bus to the train station or walk the 1.5 km to the station. It is a 15 minute train ride to Prien am Chiemsee, where you can catch another train to Munich or Salzburg.

There is the possibility of not having cell phone reception here.
Steinbergalm: You will be staying in two alp huts, with a mattress area on the second floor. Here there is also no electricity, so bring flashlights or enjoy evenings around a bonfire. Help convert a former mine site into a recreation area

Eisenberg, Rhineland-Palatinate
          July 25 - August 13, 2010

Volunteer project: Eisenberg is a small community situated in the beautiful south-western region of Germany called “Pfalz”. Eisenberg used to be a busy community heavily involved in underground mining. After closing the mine at the end of the 1980's nature has recaptured most of the area and created a unique landscape with small ponds, forest and marshland. Last year, an international volunteer group was assigned to make the landscape accessible for people of Eisenberg and neighbouring communities. Many visitors are enjoying the area on the weekends. It is a popular place for children most of all.

The volunteers will help to clear vegetation in different places of the former mine area called “Erdekaut” and will help to dig out an excavator/digger which was used while the mine was still active. Last years' group started to free the machine, but more has to be done to make it visible again. The working tasks offer a great opportunity to learn about plants and nature in general. It is the perfect project for people who love nature and to work outside and with their hands.

Preparing an exhibition of Linear Pottery culture in the oldest village in Germany

Volunteer project: The community of Schwanfeld is supposedly the oldest village in Germany. Some years back, proof of a former settlement outside of the present village from presumably 5500 B.C. was found. Schwanfeld is happy to show their treasures of the olden days to international volunteers and invites a group to get to know more about the south of Germany. This is the second time a volunteer project will take place in Schwanfeld – and everybody will be very welcoming and excited to meet the new volunteers after the success of last year.

Due to Schwanfeld being the “oldest village in Germany”, they plan to open up an exhibition of “Linear Pottery” found in the area of Schwanfeld (the oldest rural culture in the Middle of Europe) in October or November this year. Some work has to be done before the opening and the international volunteers are invited to help with these while getting to know more about the history of the village.
Apart from that, other tasks could use the energy and help of the volunteer group as well, such as: Hiking trails in the surrounding nature of Schwanfeld need renovation (signs, benches and the like) but also tasks in the area of landscape protection and preservation are awaiting. Environmental work and reconstruction of walking trails in the Frauenberg mountain

Schorndorf, Baden-Wurttemberg
          August 23 - September 12, 2010

Volunteer project: Close to Stuttgart lies a town called Schorndorf which invites international volunteers for the first time to help with environmental and clearing tasks on the „Frauenberg“ – a small mountain. Locals are awaiting you with many ideas! This project is not only about the working task but also about the exchange between (young) people from Schorndorf and the international group.

The small mountain “Frauenberg” is about 350 m high. The walking paths have to be reconstructed which means you will work physically and have to be ready to walk uphill to your working site. Your main task will be to lay a new foundation for the paths and also clear the paths where it has overgrown. Work alone will be a good way to meet local people, but there is more…

Language: English

Accommodation: In a house of the German Red Cross in a suburb of Schorndorf. The house offers beds/mats, sanitary facilities and a kitchen. It is not directly located in the centre of Schorndorf but easily reached by S-Bahn (suburban train) which also links Schorndorf to Stuttgart. In the neighbourhood of your accommodation you can find a “natural swimming pool” with waterslides and the like – a relaxing place to hang out after work. Different other associations have houses next door so you will likely be able to make contact easily.

Location: Schorndorf is situated close to Stuttgart – at about 30 km distance. It's an old city with pretty old half-timbered houses in the typical southern German style and a special charm and history. In your free time enjoy and discover Schorndorf and the surrounding nature. Due to a very good local train connection to Stuttgart, you will have possibilities to see the capital of Baden-Wurttemberg. Plus: events with locals are already in the making!

Volunteer project: It is the second time that the municipality of Wangen invites international volunteers to help out at the local summer festivals and activities for children. In the course of two weeks a play scheme called “Mini-Wangen” (August 31-September 4) and a farm holiday for local youngsters will run. Plus, the group is invited to help out at the local “forest kindergarten”.

More adventure and “natural sights” are offered in the second week of the program. The group will move to an eco-farm near Wangen to plan and take care of a group of young people who will spend their holidays on the farm. Half of the group will help out at the forest kindergarten and will be involved in taking care of kids.

The participants of the project will help taking care of the kids at several different activities at the play scheme in the first week. They are generally helping the children enjoy their summer holiday. The activities of the festivals are running from 8 am until 3 pm each day so the group should be prepared to work long hours – which can be stressful but also fun and very rewarding.
As mentioned, the group who will spend their second week on a farm. One part of the group will be there all day to attend the activities planned with and for the young people who are taking part in this vacation. There will be trips, games and other activities planned to keep everybody entertained. Own ideas and strong motivation are very welcome.

Old castles, mountain trails, the Lake Constance. But also Wangen itself has much to offer. The history of the city dates back to the year 815. The charm of Wangen lies within its historical buildings and southern German architectural style.
Due to moving to the eco-farm in the second week, the group will have the unique chance to get an insight in ecological farming and living on a farm in southern Germany. The region is stunning and offers a great lot of natural sights and activities… plus, the exchange with local young people will be extra high due to living arrangements on the farm. Definitely two exciting, adventurous and diverse weeks!

Rebuilding a nature trail and cleaning the banks of a recently restored river in Kehl

Kehl, Baden-Wurttemberg
          September 18 - October 9, 2010

Volunteer project: For the past eight years the municipality of Kehl has asked international volunteer groups to help with environmental protection in their town. There are two tasks to fulfill, which will be explained by professional supervisors.

The first task will be the rebuilding and renovation of a nature trail. Definitely volunteers will learn a lot about typical vegetation and its ecological richness.
Secondly, the banks of a small river need to get cleared from rubbish, grass and bushes to prevent flooding the town. In former times, the river was redirected to run in concrete tunnels and it was biologically dead. The municipality has removed all the concrete, allowing the small river to flow through the town once again over a length of 3 km. There are now many plants and animals living in and by the river. Volunteers will clear the banks of the river and cut the grass and bushes. They will work with machines and it may be physically hard and muddy. This is a good project to learn about nature protection and conservation.

Language: English

Accommodation: The group will live in a youth centre where all facilities are provided. There is a kitchen and different rooms to stay and spend time in. It might happen that volunteers will sleep in big tents in the garden (in case of cold nights they can move into the house). You should be prepared for this and bring a warm sleeping bag! Be open to get in contact with the local youth since they are your hosts and neighbours throughout the project!

Location: Kehl is a medium sized town on the bank of the river Rhine facing the French-German border. The Alsatian town of Strasbourg is situated on the other side of the river Rhine. It will be interesting to visit the beautiful town of Strasbourg, crossing the border to France. The youth centre is only a five minute walk from the inner city of Kehl. Other interesting outings can be the Black Forest and the nature of the southern area in general.

Train station: Kehl

Airport: Strasbourg (10 km), Frankfurt (150 km)

Age range: 18 - 30 years old (exceptions for volunteers over 30 can be made)

Environmental and renovation activities in the Swabian Albes

Mariaberg, Baden-Wurttemberg
          October 2 - October 16, 2010

Volunteer project: Shortly before arriving to Gammertingen, you will find an impressive building on top of the hill to your right – an old monastery towering over the surrounding hills and forests of the Swabian Albes. This old monastery is the centerpiece of a quarter of Gammertingen called Mariaberg! It is a beautiful place where a diverse range of people – young and old ones – come together, live, learn and work. Not only does it hold kindergartens, schools and working places for disabled but also provides a daily life with market square, swimming pool, restaurants and gym halls like a small town. We ask you to come with an open heart and mind!

Together with the gardener of the initiative, you will work on the renovation of a part of a walking path around Mariaberg. More precisely you will help clearing a field where a serpentine path will be set up and support environmental and renovation work around the old mill that is situated outside of the village.

Language: English

Accommodation: Accommodation will be in a gym hall in the centre of Mariaberg close to all needed facilities like shower, etc. You will certainly have access to the swimming pool of the quarter and have the opportunity to use different other facilities.

Location: As mentioned, Mariaberg is a part of the town of Gammertingen situated on top of a hill around an old monastery. Gammertingen is situated 80 km south of Stuttgart, amidst the Swabian Albes (not Alps!!) within spectacular nature – a beautiful mountain chain. Without a doubt you will find enough to do in Mariaberg itself (swimming pool, barbecue, gym halls, bowling, restaurants and café!) but the region with its nature, typical Swabian villages and small towns is really inviting as well.

Train station: Gammertingen

Airport: Stuttgart, Karlsruhe (Baden-Baden)

Age range: 18 - 30 years old (exceptions for volunteers over 30 can be made)
