Muehlhausen, Thuringia
          June 28 - July 18, 2009

Volunteer project: The local host is a charity organisation running workshops and schools for disabled. They have been hosting international volunteer projects for many years now. Former workcamps got a very warm welcome and were a big success – it always meant a great experience for all volunteers and inhabitants of the place.

The charity organisation has its own farm (horses and more), restaurant, and holiday place called “Alter Bahnhof” outside of the town. The building needs to be painted inside and outside. In addition to that, there will be various painting and gardening jobs around the workshops and the school of the charity organisation.

Language: English

Accommodation: The group will be living in a cozy, yellow house on the property of the charity organisation next to the buildings of the workshops. Kitchen, sleeping rooms and sanitary facilities are available – and much more. There is a big garden around the house with a meadow, trees, a pond and a barbecue grill. Next to the workshop buildings you can also find a soccer field. On the roof of the house, there is a balcony, from where you have a great view on the landscape around. Muehlhausen provides a lot of shopping possibilities and is easily reachable on foot or by bike.

Location: Muehlhausen is a very old German town with about 50.000 inhabitants. Visiting the city centre and looking at the old houses, you can still imagine how Germany must have been in former times. Muehlhausen is situated in the beautiful forest of Thuringia. Nearby are many interesting places like the city Weimar (home of the poets Schiller and Goethe) or the Wartburg where Martin Luther translated the new testament of the Bible. There are also many other interesting and historical places to go for an excursion.

For the first time the community invites international volunteers to help with the construction of a meeting place for people of all generations. A wooded area in the centre of Weisendorf is the perfect place to create such a meeting point. Ideas have been collected from inhabitants of the village and a list of wishes about what to build in this area has been put up.

The volunteers will help to clean the area from plants and trees so that there is enough space to build up different kinds of seating-accommodations, an “experience trail” with different attractions, a ping-pong table and a small basketball court. Organising leisure time activities for disabled people

Volunteer project: The local host is a charity organization offering jobs in workshops for mentally and physically disabled persons. Many of them live in their families, others in special homes of the charity. End of July the workshops are closed for holidays for two weeks. Many residents go for a holiday trip, others have to stay at the site. For them you will offer in co-operation with their professional social workers a leisure time programme.

Volunteers and disabled people will spend their time together being creative, having fun, doing handicrafts, going on excursions, playing games and sports,.... It is the free choice of the disabled people to join the offered activities or not. So it is quite difficult to estimate now the number of persons you will be working with. An introduction session for all volunteers will take place on the first day to explain the rules, responsibilities and tasks. The volunteers will have the chance to get to know the daily life of the residents. The residents and the local social workers are looking forward to meet you. For several days one part of the group will work in a similar institution of the host in Nunkirchen (25 km).

Special requirements: Please add a motivation letter in English or German to show your interest and experience in working with disabled people (What kind of experience do you have? What do you think you can contribute?). We expect a high motivation to work with people with disabilities. Some experience in this area would be helpful.

Living History – The Effects of Emigration

Cloppenburg, Lower Saxony
          July 18 - August 9, 2009

Volunteer project: For the next three weeks you will be living in Quatmannshof, an old traditional German ‘Fachwerkhaus’, right in Cloppenburg, the oldest open air museum in Germany. Your team will be supporting the museum through landscape work: the graves around an older building need to be excavated. You will also work in traditional workshops using traditional tools and techniques, for pottery, weaving, brewing, and baking, to allow these traditions to stay alive. You will become experts in these techniques through small instruction sessions.

Study part: The former residents in almost each and every one of these houses were people who, like many Europeans, immigrated to new countries between 1820 and 1870. What motivated them to take this journey? What expectations did they have from their new land? Were their dreams fulfilled? You will follow in their footsteps all the way to Bremerhaven, to the ‘German Emigrant Museum” where you will find answers to these questions. You will also visit the Bremerhaven Harbor, where most of the immigrants had their last view of their homeland. Perhaps you will find some foot prints from your own family.

For two weeks in this theater workshop you will work with theater instructors on facial expressions, self confidence, rhetoric, ambition, condition, and rhythm. Environmental study camp along the Werra River

from Eisfeld to Eisenach,
Thuringia          August 1 - August 8, 2009

Volunteer project: This athletic study camp will lead you along the mystic waters of the Werra River, which runs right along the former German border. The center of the river was the dividing line between the former East and West German states. Today however, nature has taken back over and has left us with a green band along the valley. As one of the most polluted rivers of East Germany, the river still suffers from salt polluted deposits. It is this problem that we would like to explore. We will get in contact with people on site and undertake various protective measures. If you would like to experience the river live and learn more about its story, you are wholeheartedly invited on this journey.

The camp will be divided into three parts. The beginning will be in Eisfeld, where you will be introduced to the project, and then you will paddle from Bad Salzungen to Hörschel, ending in Eisenach for the end of the camp.

In the free time you can hike along the river, visit the city of Bad Salzungen, visit a museum dedicated to this border, visit „Monte Kali“, the protected nature area of Rhäden, as well as many other adventurous activities.

Special requirements: You should be especially interested in environment and history, as well as be fit enough to paddle 20 km.

Language: English

Accommodation: You will sleep in small houses and in tents

Volunteer project: For the third time the municipality of Pluederhausen invites international volunteers to help with the renovation of a bus shelter in front of a school. Every day more than 350 pupils take the bus to go to school. The bus shelter was built 50 years ago and offers lots of space for the pupils to wait for the bus, but now it looks old and a little shabby.

The volunteers will help to renew the bus shelter: the roof needs to get fixed and the wooden panels around the roof need to be repaired and painted. Professional workers will support, instruct and guide the participants at work. Volunteers should be prepared to work in all weathers and work may be hard sometimes.

Volunteer project: „Teufelsburg” (devil’s castle) is the ruin of an old castle on a mountain crest which was built in the 14th century and destroyed in the 17th century. International volunteer groups and local volunteers started to restore the castle in the 1960s. Today it attracts many visitors and the yard is used for cultural events. You can also find a small museum here. But there is still a lot of work to be done.

The volunteers will build a footpath along the castle's wall, so that visitors can circuit the site. The work will include clearing vegetation, transporting materials such as gravel and stones, laying steps and installing handrails. The hill is very steep and the work will be physically hard in parts. But the beautiful view compensates for this. A group of Germans will work at the same site.

The local community is very welcoming. Volunteers will have close contact with the locals and should be open for this. Many excursions in the area are possible (Saarbruecken, valley of the Saar, hiking trips,...).

Nature protection activities in the Black Forest

Triberg, Baden-Wurttemberg
          August 9 - August 22, 2009

Volunteer project: This project is run in cooperation with an association which provides voluntary services in forest and hillside regions for mostly German, Austrian and Swiss participants of all ages. The association is very active in the field of environmental protection and education and their projects are perfectly organised and supervised by professional forest rangers. A small group of international volunteers is going to join another group of national volunteers in order to support a project situated in Triberg which lies in the beauty of the Black Forest. Basic conditions, physically hard but very useful work and pure nature are awaiting the (very flexible, adventurous and experienced) volunteers from abroad!

Work is all about nature protection in the Black Forest. A diverse nature containing different kinds of forest, marsh lands, meadows and willows needs to be protected. That includes more precisely a variety of working tasks such as clearing vegetation and trees on marshland and streams, reactivating fallow land, protecting the habitat of the mountain cock. Work will be longer than in a usual workcamp because it is the very focus of the project. On the other hand, a learning experience is guaranteed! Special project, perfect for nature lovers!

Special requirements: Speaking and understanding basic German will be convenient since the international group will live together with German speaking volunteers.

Language: English and German

Accommodation: The whole group will live in a cabin in the middle of the forest. The international volunteers will sleep inside the house, but if they want to bring a tent, there is also the possibility to be more adventurous and sleep outdoors. There will be running water but no electricity. Sanitary facilities are in place.

Location: The project is actually situated in the forest around 9 km outside of Triberg. Most of the time will therefore be spent in the nature and the surrounding of the cabin. Usually there are hiking trips/study parts planned with the project leaders beforehand. Triberg is a pretty city with typical regional aspects and culture – mostly known for its “cuckoo clocks”. The international volunteers will be able to experience southern-German culture more closely during the free time.

Maintenance of a recently restored river in Kehl

Kehl, Baden-Wurttemberg
          September 13 - October 3, 2009

Volunteer project: For the seventh time the municipality of Kehl asks an international group to help with environmental protection in their town: There is a small river running through Kehl. In former times the river was redirected to run in concrete tunnels and it was biologically dead. The municipality has removed all the concrete, allowing the small river to flow through the town once again. There are now many plants and animals living in and by the river. However, since the river is in the middle of the town, rubbish and grass must be cleared from the banks regularly to prevent flooding in the town.

Volunteers will clear the banks of the river and cut the grass and bushes. They will work with machines and it may be physically hard and muddy. This is a good project to learn about nature prevention and conservation. In case of finishing earlier or bad weather conditions, there is another working project: a nature trail needs to get rebuilt. Definitely volunteers will learn a lot about typical vegetation and its ecological richness.

Language: English

Accommodation: The group will live in a youth centre close to the river where all facilities are provided. There is a big kitchen and different rooms to stay and spend time in. Outside you can find a place for barbecuing, a lake and trick fountains to enjoy. The area around the youth centre is rather spacious and provides many activities and things to experience. The volunteers should be prepared and open to get in contact with the local youth since they are their hosts and neighbours throughout the project.

It will be interesting to visit the beautiful town of Strasbourg, crossing the border to France. The youth centre is only a five minute walk from the inner city of Kehl.
