Volunteer opportunities in China

Educational programs for children and interaction with elderly in Yunnan
       Yunnan Province          July 10 - July 21, 2010

Volunteer project: Zhai Shang school is located in Ludian County in Yunnan Province. The village is located 2,400 meters above sea level, high up in the mountains. The area is cold and often has bad weather. Unfortunately for the Hmong people who live in this area, the land has very thin soil and lies on a steep slope.

This volunteer project will take place in a community school, which was launched in January of 2010. Volunteers are direly needed in this area to help in the implementation of school activities and to improve the educational capacity and curriculum for the students, in hopes of providing them with a good future. The volunteers will mainly engage with the children in activities which foster better education, so as to contribute their knowledge and demonstrate their enthusiasm.
Additionally, volunteers will visit the villagers and share in the local way of life and custom. The project aims to allow volunteers to offer their aid and understanding, in order to form valuable connections with the community. In this spirit, the volunteers will also visit the elderly people of a nursing home, where they can brighten those people’s days through performances and communication.

Location: Yunnan Province, Zhao Tong District, Lu Dian County, Shui Mo town, Miao Village, Zhai Shang school

Terminal: Wujiaba Airport in Kunming. The volunteers will be picked up at the airport, railway station or long-distance bus station.

Age range: 18 and over

Improve access to drinking water and better education in a rural Sichuan village
       SiChuan Province          July 12 - July 23, 2010

Volunteer project: The TaErDi Recovered Village mainly consists of the Yi ethnic group and currently has 340 people. Thirty-eight of these people have recovered from Hansen’s disease, which has greatly affected the villagers over the last couple of years - both physically and emotionally. The village people have no means to leave their current location, because they are stuck in their impoverished state for financial, societal, and education reasons. Every day, they face the reality of their village’s low productivity, large population, insufficient land. They have no medical security, and thus have unbelievably limited access to medicine. The village school has 41 children enrolled, but has an urgent need of both teachers and funds. The current teachers are also very limited in their education.

Since August of 2009, the village has had volunteer workcamps, in which the volunteers are asked to offer their aid in improving the education and the local environment. In this project, the volunteers will continue these efforts, by focusing on better education. Additionally, volunteers will help some villagers gain access to drinking water, which is very necessary to good health. There is opportunity for the volunteers to make a difference for these villagers in almost every domain of life, while sharing in the reality and culture of this distant community.

Location: SiChuan Province, XiChang Prefecture City, YanYuan County, YouSuo Township, TaErDi village

Terminal: Chengdu Shuangliu Airport. The volunteers will be picked up at the airport, railway station or long-distance bus station.

Age range: 18 and over

Teaching and renovation activities in an Elementary School in ShiMenKan
       GuiZhou Province          July 16 - July 27, 2010

Volunteer project: XinZhong Elementary School is situated in ShiMenKan town, and offers an opportunity for education to approximately 140 students, most of who come from the XinYing and ZhongZai villages and are part of the Miao minority group. The school offers classes from kindergarten to 6th grade, and often, one grade will have students of many different ages. The school is staggeringly understaffed, with a total of only 8 teachers—5 are Christians from the northeast, and 3 are locals. Many teachers have been hired recently, but they left soon after moving from the city to the village, because they could not tolerate the local dilapidated and mountainous environment. The constant changing of teachers has had a certain negative effect on the students’ development.

The first international volunteer project in the village was organized on the summer of 2007. We built a soccer field at the school, formed very strong relationships with the students and teachers, and also went into the mountain villages to spread information about the risks of Fluorine poisoning.
We have had 4 volunteer groups in the school since then. Aside from building a soccer field, we have also taught classes and have beautified the school’s outside appearance by painting the school walls, glazing classroom desks, and painting pictures in the classrooms. In this upcoming volunteer project, the participants will continue these positive efforts by offering education aid, as well as by helping the school and the local community according to current needs.

Location: GuiZhou Province, Bijie Prefecture City, WeiNing County, ShiMenKan Town, XinZhong Elementary School

Terminal: Guiyang Airport. The volunteers will be picked up at the airport, railway station or long-distance bus station.

Age range: 18 and over

Extra fee: 150 USD
The extra fee is intended to support the hosting organization who does not have sufficient funds. It is due upon arrival on the project.

Help for recovered leprosy patients in Yunnan
       Yunnan Province          July 18 - July 29, 2010

Volunteer project: Dali Huang CaoBa village is located in HuaYing town, in a Bai minority autonomous region. The village was built in 1953, mainly to host local people who had recovered from leprosy. In its beginnings, the village had around 80 people, but currently the village has only 30 households and 50 people, 42 of who are recovered leprosy patients. Most of the villagers are elderly people, and the average age is over 65.

Since Huang CaoBa hosted its first international volunteer group in 2007, volunteers have built a bathroom, done simple living maintenance, built and repaired roads, gathered firewood, and constructed a pavilion over the water source to protect the villagers from rain and wind. In the summer of 2009, we helped the villagers repair their roofs.
In this upcoming project, the volunteers will help the village people by making home visits and helping the villagers with daily life by bringing firewood and restoration activities. Additionally, volunteers will help form relationships with the local people and nearby villages, by interacting with the community themselves.

Location: Yunnan Province, Dali City, HuaYing Village

Terminal: Wujiaba Airport in Kunming. The volunteers will be picked up at the airport, railway station or long-distance bus station

Age range: 18 and over

Extra fee: 150 USD

Support the economic and educational development of remote communities in Yunnan Province
       Yunnan Province          August 9 - August 18, 2010

Volunteer project: BaJiaoChong is located in WenShang district’s MaGuan county and is approximately 15 km from the county’s main city. Situated near mountains and rivers, the village’s scenery is strikingly beautiful. The village was built in 1974 and has a total of 35 people, of which there are 15 leprosy recoverers. Currently, there are also 4 students (1 in high school, and 3 in elementary school).

In August of 2006, BaJiaoChong hosted its first international volunteer project. The volunteers helped the villagers repair roads, build water storage facilities, and perform personal maintenance for the recoverers. In October of 2008, volunteers came to the village once again to help with farm work and to tutor the children.
With this current project, the volunteers will engage with this small community and plan for its economic and educational well-being. The local people are in great need of support in order to improve their lifestyle, their village atmosphere, and means of income.

Location: Yunnan Province, WenShan District, MaGuan County, BaJiaoChong Village

Terminal: Wujiaba Airport in Kunming. The volunteers will be picked up at the airport, railway station or long-distance bus station

Age range: 18 and over

Extra fee: 150 USD

Educational activities with children and farm work with villagers in Yunnan Province
       Yunnan Province          August 9 - August 18, 2010

Volunteer project: TengMieHe Recovered Village is situated on a foothill in one of GuoDaZhai town’s surrounding forests. This village was established in 1953 and has around 240 villagers, of whom 100 are leprosy recoverers and 90 are children in the village. The village has one elementary school with 2 teachers, and 14 students that are split into 1st and 3rd grade. Approximately 18 students are in 4th grade or above. Outside of the village, there is also a Project Hope Elementary School that costs 15rmb per week (tuition covers food, boarding during the week, and return trips back home).

With this project, the volunteers will mainly focus on education, by leading community efforts to improve the teaching environment. Volunteers will also help with some of farm work. The project mainly aims to form a personal connection between the volunteers and the local people, hopefully inspiring hope for a better future among the members of this population.

Help improve the water supply and the environment in rural Yunnan
       Yunnan Province          August 9 - August 18, 2010

Volunteer project: ZuTangZi village, in which this project takes place, is located near ChaKe town. The town is separated from ZuTangZi village by 5km, which can be a hard journey for the villagers on rainy days. In total, there are 26 villagers, 16 males and 10 females. Eighteen of them are recovered leprosy patients. The village only has two 3 year old boys, because the majority of the recovered patients do not have any children. Evidently, the village greatly lacks manpower, since there are only 5 young people. The village is in an unfortunate state and has many empty houses. Due to years of neglect, some have collapsed, and others are deemed very dangerous. Recovered leprosy patients live mostly in the outskirts of the village.

In the summer of 2009, a group of international volunteers started work on the construction of two water reservoirs. However, due to the impact of rain, this project was only completed by local craftsmen last October.
In this voluntary project, the participants will mainly be engaged in helping solve local issues with the lack of easy access to drinking water. The volunteers will combine their efforts to improve the water supply and the surrounding environment.

Location: Yunnan Province, JianShui County, ChaKe Town, ZuTangZi Village

Terminal: Wujiaba Airport in Kunming. The volunteers will be picked up at the airport, railway station or long-distance bus station

Age range: 18 and over

Extra fee: 150 USD
The extra fee is intended to support the hosting organization who does not have sufficient funds. It is due upon arrival on the project.
