Support for disadvantaged children, youth and women
Cordova, Cebu       May 3 - May 15, 2017

Volunteer project: We are looking for highly motivated international volunteers to join this uniquely special project that would involve different intercultural learning activities with the local community. This project is implemented with a women’s civic organization in support of disadvantaged children, youth and women through provision of education for children who are enrolled in Day Care Centers in Cebu City and Cordova as well as skills training and livelihood assistance for young mothers and deaf and hard of hearing youth. The project aims to support facilities that need improvement, nutrition and wellness aid for children and youth as well as skills and livelihood development.

With the support and assistance of local volunteers and community residents, the international volunteers will take part in activities such as:
- Help in the renovation of classrooms and school facilities like refurbishing, repainting and beautification;
- Assist in the provision of nutrition, health care and wellness to local children and youth;
- Undertake environmental related activities like coastal clean-up, arranging garbage disposal area, tree planting, advocacy, etc.;
- Interact with local children and youth through art, sports and team building activities;
- Exchange of culture through music, games, food, language, etc.

Leisure time: Gilutungan Island is surrounded with white sandy beach with crystal clear blue waters where volunteers can swim anytime of the day. There's also several rich natural marine sanctuaries. Volunteers could opt to go for island hopping and enjoy snorkeling or diving, etc. Volunteers can also choose to visit various cultural heritage sites in Mactan Island and Cebu City or experience other eco-tourism adventures like canyoneering, caving, trekking, etc. activities around the island of Cebu.

Accommodation: The volunteers will be accommodated in a local community facility at the project site. Please, bring your own sleeping bag. Filipino food will be prepared by the local community and the volunteers are encouraged to assist so they can become familiar with the traditional Filipino way of preparing and cooking food.

Location: Barangay San Jose and Sawang Calero are among the poorest and most populous urban communities in Cebu City. Cebu City is the second biggest city in the Philippines that is rich in cultural and heritage sites. Gilutungan Island is a tiny but populous island and among the most disadvantaged islands in the town of Cordova, Cebu. The island is rich in marine and natural resources but suffers from overpopulation, very limited electricity and water supply and lack of proper garbage and waste disposal system.

Extra fee: 250 Euro
The extra fee is intended to support the local host of the project who does not have sufficient funds. It is due upon arrival.
