Volunteer opportunities in PORTUGAL

 

Archeological research project in Freixo de Numao

Volunteer project: The international volunteer project aims to support the efforts for protecting and promoting the regional cultural patrimony of Freixo de Numão. The objective of this program is to give continuity to an archeological research project and the desire to turn the archeological place into a museum that has been developed since 1980 with the permanent support of the Portuguese Institute for Youth.

Tasks to be carried out by the volunteer group:
- Maintenance and restoration aiming at turning the archeological place into a museum;
- Methodological digging, with an archaeologist's help;
- Soil riddling and floating, aiming at collecting different elements (coals, seeds, bones, etc.) for analysis;
- Materials washing and labeling.
During the project volunteers will work about 6 hours a day.

Free time activities: In the spare time, volunteers will visit belvederes, castles, historical villages (Marialva), Vale do Côa engraving and Douro Wine Region (UNESCO Patrimonies). There will also be a visit to the Museum of Bread in Seia and the Mountain of the Estrela.

Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in a Youth Centre, composed of 2 dormitories and 8 rooms.

Avanca International Meeting of Cinema, Television, Video and Multimedia
      
Avanca          July 14 - July 28, 2009

Volunteer project: With more than two decades of existence, Cine-Club of Avanca produces, distributes and exhibits cinema works and audiovisuals beyond organizing, since 1997, the “International Meeting of Cinema, Television, Video and Multimedia”.
Volunteers in this project will be involved in various levels of the organization, providing support for the success of this International Meeting.
AVANCA being an idea sharing favored space, creative fusion and cultural interchange between professionals, students and cinema and multimedia lovers, the volunteers will naturally participate and dive in this international, culture and creative atmosphere.

The volunteers will have variety of tasks:
During the preparation and setting phase:
• Setting of the different spaces in AVANCA’09;
• Poster and pending poster distribution;
• Exposition setting and organization;
• Adaptation of the Egas Moniz school classrooms for workshop attendance;
• Installation and testing of workshop related Video-Informatics equipment;
• Cleaning and preparation of the Auditorium of Avanca for competitive sessions of Cinema and Video;
• Arranging the Egas Moniz School’s polyvalent hall for the Television competitive sessions;
• Airport reception and welcoming of the AVANCA’09 international guests – directors, actors, producers, technicians, etc.
• Cleaning and maintenance of spaces and sanitary installations used by the volunteers;

During the International Meeting:
• Check-in support for the AVANCA’09 participants and guests;
• Organization of the available camping for the workshop participants;
• Maintenance of the workshop rooms;
• Cantina support;
• AVANCA’09 sale posts support (which will have several articles related with the festival);
• AVANCA’09 Secretariat support;
• AVANCA’09 Press Cabinet Support;
• Film Projection support during competitive sessions;
• Cleaning and maintenance of the AVANCA’09 related installations;
• Exposition safety;
• Help in the Gastronomy Festival held in AVANCA’09 weekend;

After AVANCA’09 ending:
• Collecting and verifying workshop equipment;
• Repositioning of the used spaces to their initial configuration and cleaning of the same spaces;
• Dismounting of the expositions and wrapping the exposed works;
• Collecting AVANCA’09 posters and pending posters in Avanca and in Aveiro region.

Free time activities: In the moments dedicated to cultural animation and discovering of the surroundings, the Cine-Clube de Avanca offers a set of activities, which will give an insight of the social realities, cultural and gastronomical, of the village of Avanca and the region that extends betweens the cities of Aveiro and Porto.

Dream of Jazz
      
Loule          July 14 - July 28, 2009

Volunteer project: The international volunteer project takes place in Loulé, a small town from the Algarve in the south of Portugal with 25.000 inhabitants, only 10 km from the ocean.
Casa da Cultura de Loulé was founded in the end of the 1970’s by a group of teachers working and living in the city of Loulé, determined to provide new cultural activities for the community. The most emblematic activities by Casa da Cultura were art exhibitions, music shows, poetry, photo, chess, gymnastics and of course the International Jazz Festival. Besides all other activities, the ones deserving special attention are the theatre plays that the association has been producing for 26 years.

The volunteers are invited to help out the local Casa da Cultura to realize the 15th edition of the “Loulé International Jazz Festival”, mostly by promoting it in different ways. The participants in this project will promote the Jazz festival with posters and flyers all over the region, and in the show days will get to help a bit in almost all that is necessary to make a music show. The promotion of the Festival will cover almost all the Algarve, and for that, the volunteers, along with the group leaders, will travel by car in the region.

Free time activities: Bike riding, kayak, trips to the East and West beaches of the Algarve, paintball, visits to places of interest, many different games to encourage interaction between the international participants and with the local population.

Accommodation: The group will be accommodated in a school gym.

Discovering the rural and environmental world
      
Lagos          July 18 - July 31, 2009

Volunteer project: The project host is a local association committed to social integration and healthy youth development. Their main activities include holidays camps, occupational free time activities, recreational activities, sport activities, reading club, providing public internet access, arts club, non formal education, primary scholar support.

The aim of the international volunteer project is: Development of educational and recreational activities with social and environmental values, with focus on integration, cultural sharing and in a more sustainable lifestyle.

Work tasks:
- Daily farm tasks: cleaning and preparing donkey’s house and vegetable waste composting
- Other farm tasks: vegetable nursery, creating vegetable garden beds, watering, weeding, flood irrigation, carob and almond harvesting, mulching vegetable garden beds, seedlings transplanting, creating elevated vegetable beds for wheelchair access, useful constructions
- Creating recreational activities (obstacles challenge)

Educational activities: Solar ovens workshop; Palm handicraft; Presentation and documentaries about Permaculture; Bread workshop; Pumpkin jam workshop; Aromatic plants’ planters workshop; Bird boxes workshop.
Recreational activities: Introductory games; Intercultural night; Beach (almost every morning) and beach games; Environmental documentaries; Orienteering in a forest; Obstacles challenge; Karaoke; Archery; Group theatre; Farewell Party.

Free time activities: Visits to Monchique (mountain and village), to A Rocha center (bird ringing and educational center) and to Lagos (the nearest town).

Vale do Mouro archeological project
      
Coriscada          July 27 - August 10, 2009

Volunteer project: The international volunteers will participate in an archeological project in the Valley Moro, Corisco county of Meda, continuing the work started in the past years and guided by an archaeologist.

The work activities involve participating in the work of archaeological research, excavation, washing of material, classification of the found material, and participation in a roundtable discussion and promotion of the Vale do Mouro.

Language: English

Free time activities: Visiting the region, etc. It is intended that the activities are participatory and involve other local youth.

Accommodation: Building or tent option.

Location: The town of Coriscada is located in the northern part of the Beira Alta, belongs to the municipality of Meda, District of Guarda, is near the archaeological park of the Valley Côa (30 km), the medieval village of Trancoso (16 km) and the Historical Village of Marialva (5 km) and the seat of the county (8 km).

Promoting and organizing sport activities for children and youth
      
Evora           August 1 - August 15, 2009

Volunteer project: Évora Volleyball Club is a non profit youth association aiming mainly at the promotion of sport among young people, not only in volleyball but also in many other ways. Three international volunteer projects have been organized in Evora in the last two years, involved in promotion and encouragement of sporting activities in partnership with local and regional authorities, running a couple of classes, among other activities, all of them linked to sport.

The international volunteers will promote and stimulate sportive activities in Évora Swimming pool complex, a place with a large number of children and young people. So, we will develop sportive activities and animation specially targeted for children and youth who will be in the swimming pool area, and still focus on the exchange of experience among participants. During the project the volunteers will work about 5 hours/day.

Free time activities: In the free time, volunteers will visit the region, especially around Évora, and will walk in the pathways.

Accommodation: The accommodation will be in the building of the Évora Volleyball Club.

Environmental protection activities at the banks of Anços River
      
Pombal          August 1 - August 15, 2009

Volunteer project: The main activities of the Youth Association of Pombal are swimming, (BBT) mountain bike, extreme sports (radical sports), juvenile mobility (summer camps and work camps), awareness campaigns about different issues, like the environment and health care. The main aims of the association are promoting citizenship and integration of young people from the Pombal county, promoting good environmental education and habits for healthy lifestyle.

This organization exhibits a project where the main objective is to allow young people to be involved in a volunteering program aiming at environment protection as well as contributing for volunteering work valorization. The mornings will be reserved for cleaning activities by the Anços River; the afternoons and the evenings, as well as weekends, will be reserved for leisure, sports, visiting local and regional monuments, getting in contact with the local culture and customs.

Accommodation: The participants will camp over at Quinta Sant’Ana.

Location: The project will be located near Estrada Nacional nº1, between Lisboa and Porto, approximately 10 km of Pombal, and it’s about 20 minutes from the sea. Due to it’s proximity to the Sicó Mountain and the Anços River, and also due to its river beach, Redinha is well known as a rural village of great natural beauty.

Environmental clean up in Peneda-Geres National Park
      
Braga           August 1 - August 15, 2009

Volunteer project: Peneda Geres National Park was the first protected area to be founded in Portugal in 1971 and it is the only National Park in the country. Having once been the home of the brown bear and the mountain goat, Peneda-Geres is today one of the last refuges of the great predators, such as the wolf and the royal eagle. Health Adventure Association is a youth association that aims at promoting man-environment binomial. Within the accomplished activities, pedestrian courses, mycological activities (mushrooms), national and international workcamps, environmental activities in protected areas, can be mentioned.

The project’s theme is related to the environment and consists of carrying out cleaning tasks in Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês – National Park of Peneda-Gerês,  up-keeping the Park’s nursery, works in the newer Garrano centre, and fluvial beach cleaning.

Free time activities: In the spare time, the volunteers will visit the region, especially Terras do Bouro and Braga, will hike in the National Park Peneda-Gerês, will have nautical activities, will swim in the river, will play paintball, bow shot, horse riding, create leather objects, attend a cithara concert. The participants will also have the opportunity to attend some local festivities (Terras de Bouro).

Accommodation: The group will be accommodated in a house with a kitchen, dinning room, sleeping rooms, bathrooms.

Environmental work at the banks of Macas river
      
Quintanilha          August 1 - August 15, 2009

Volunteer project: The project partner is a local association involved in cultural and sports activities, prevention of forest fires, holidays in motion, support the creation of a shelter on the Pilgrims Way to Santiago, support of the parish festivities, youth activities, international field work, etc.

The specific tasks for the volunteer group are to clean the banks of the river Maçãs, signposting the pathway of Santiago, preservation of mills, touristic and environmental tours, meetings with the local community, cleaning up trash.

Language: English

Free time activities: Kayaks, walks, trips to the frontier villages between Portugal and Spain, debates on the river Maças, ending with a meeting at the waterfront of the river.

Accommodation: In mountain shelters and in camping tents

Location: The location is in the north of Portugal, in the Northeast of Trás-os-Montes, near the province of Zamora (Spain) in the county and district of Bragança, Natural Park of Montesinho, village and parish of Quintanilha and the river of Maçãs (at the border with Spain).

Reimagining solidarity
      
Granja do Ulmeiro          August 3 - August 17, 2009

Volunteer project: Action for Justice and Peace is an association that has as objective to build a culture of peace, based on the rights of all persons, on inclusive and participative democracy, on social and cognitive justice and in an environment that is able to give and preserve life. Their mission is to promote dialogues on feminism, peace and demilitarization, to strengthen actions against poverty and violence, to develop counter-hegemonic bonds between the local and the global. The association works in the following areas: Equality of Opportunities and Parity; Human Rights Training and Education; Community Development and Solidarity Alternatives; Voluntary Work; Participation in Networks and Platforms; Production of alternative knowledge.

The volunteers will support the local association centre with painting, re-building; promoting a local festival – music, dance, food; promoting a “Social Market” as a social and solidary economic alternative; promoting intercultural interaction; cleaning streets.

Free time activities: Time will be taken to visit the region, namely the city of Coimbra and the beach of Figueira-da-Foz, as well as the city of Oporto.

Accommodation: In shared rooms.

Pechao Traditional Parties
      
Pechão          August 12 - August 26, 2009

Volunteer project:  The host association has been organizing throughout the years a series of activities, namely: exchanges; national and international work camps; holiday centers and camps; sportive holidays; holidays in movement since 1996, among other permanent activities, such as: group of dances and folklore, sport schools, etc.

The project theme is related to Pechão Traditional Parties. There are different activities: cleaning, painting and signaling of the surrounding area as well as cleaning and painting of small bridges near the sport zone. These activities will certainly give to young people a new contact with a different culture inserting them in an intercultural learning experience. The volunteers will work around 4 hours a day.

Language: English

Free time activities: In the spare time, the volunteers will visit the region. In the afternoon, there will be several activities to make volunteers aware of the region, such as: visiting Pechão Parish, neighboring villages (Olhão and Faro), its population and habits, the Formosa Estuary and its beaches as well as other regions in Algarve. We will visit the most attractive places of the parish as well as Olhão e Faro historical sites, Vilamoura Marina, the windward side of Algarve (Lagos/Sagres) and the leeward (Vila Real de Santo António) among others. Visit to FATACIL – Lagoa, Mediaeval Days of Castro Marim, visit to an aquatic park, visits to places for leisure activities (Albufeira, Lagos, Faro e Tavira). In Pechão sport zone we can play different games, such as football, basketball, handball, volleyball, tennis and others, whenever time permits and participants feel like.

Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in male and female dormitories, placed in Pechão Sport Zone multivalent rooms.

Organizing sport events for the youth of Evora
      
Evora          August 16 - August 31, 2009

Volunteer project: The project is organized in cooperation with Évora Volleyball Club (Clube de Vólei de Évora) which has as a main objective the promotion of sport among young people, not only through volleyball but also in many other ways. They have hosted three international volunteer projects in the last two years, and are involved in the promotion and encouragement of sporting activities in partnership with local and regional authorities.

The aim of the volunteer group will be to get close to the young people living in rural areas, promoting and boosting them with sporting activities. So, the volunteers will develop sport activities and animation especially targeted for children and youth. The activities will be taking place in gardens and other green spaces in rural villages and will focus on the exchange of experience among the participants.
The volunteers will work about 5 hours a day.

Free time activities: In the free time, the volunteers will visit the region, especially around Évora, will walk along the pathways and moments, and will participate in cultural exchanges.

Accommodation: In the building of the Évora Volleyball Club.

Creating a ceramic tile decoration in Sao Joaninho
       São Joaninho          August 17 - August 31, 2009

Volunteer project: Clube Recreativo de São Joaninho is a non profit association founded in 1993. Cultural and sportive progress leaded to the need of creating and developing projects in musical, theatre and folklore areas, which have profound roots in the village. Nevertheless, the Association extended its intervention to themes such as diversity and equality of opportunities, intercultural learning and professional training.

The project promotes the restoration and increasing the value of the cultural-historical inheritance, the creativity and the innovation, the intercultural dialog and the civilizations alliance. The aims are the mobility and the exchange of young people with different experiences and knowledge, sharing of cultures, religions, traditions, realities and knowledge, and to appeal to the creativity and innovation of young people so that, through the knowledge they are going to acquire, they can build a decorative panel in ceramic tile. During the project, the volunteers will work about 5 hours a day. The tasks to carry out are the research of methods and techniques of decoration with tile, and to decorate a panel of ceramic tiles.

Free time activities: Free time activities will be also organized for the volunteers. The program will also have a cultural component.

Preserving the rural and cultural heritage in Faia Brava Reserve
      
Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo          August 18 - August 30, 2009

Volunteer project: The project is organized in cooperation with an environment NGO, created in 2000 at Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Guarda district, Portugal. Their mission is the conservation of the Riba-Côa natural heritage. To achieve this goal, the objectives are the study and conservation of flora and fauna of the Côa, Águeda and Douro watersheds, environmental education, development of sustainable rural development projects, and the recovery and promotion of the cultural and architectural heritage of the region. Their main project, the Faia Brava Reserve, at the Côa Valley SPA, is a 600 ha property, managed exclusively for nature and culture heritage conservation.

The goal of this volunteer project is to support the inventory and recovery of abandoned rural structures and constructions, as well as the compilation of local stories and knowledge, for the development of ecotourism activities at the Faia Brava Reserve. The participants will receive theoretical and practical information from specialists on rural architecture inventory and recovery methodologies, and will take part in practical inventory work. Reconstruction fieldwork will also be done on rural houses, sheds, stonewalls and traditional roofs, as well as the marking of theme nature trails, which will allow tourists to visit rediscovered and recovered rural heritage.

Free time activities: On evenings and days off, the volunteers will have the opportunity to discover the region, through guided visits to rock art sites at the Côa Valley Archaeological Park, bird watching activities, traditional music and rural activity evenings, with the support of the local population.

Accommodation: Rented house at the closest village. The house is fully equipped with kitchen, bathroom and bunk bed rooms. The village has a small supermarket and café. Transport to the nearest town will be offered for groceries, pharmacy, etc.

Location: The Algodres village is located 14 km from Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo (Guarda). The fieldwork will be done at the Faia Brava Reserve, 4 km away from the village.

Nature conservation work in the glacial valley of the river Zezere
      
Manteigas          August 19 - August 31, 2009

Volunteer project: The local host is an informal non-profit group that develops activities contributing to the preservation and promotion of the natural and cultural patrimony. They organize seminars, workshops, concerts and trekking circuits.

The aim of the international volunteer project is preserving the banks of the river Zêzere and developing interpersonal relations among volunteers from different cultural and social realities. The volunteers will also help promote the culture and patrimony of the rural region. The group will work in the heart of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park and the activities include recovering and cleaning the banks of the river Zêzere, restoration and maintenance of hydraulic structures, creating sculptures with the collected material.

Language: English

Free time activities: Trekking circuits in the Park, use of the river swimming pool, visits to towns, monuments and museums, tasting of traditional food and exploring the nature.

Accommodation: In a house transformed into a hostel, with rooms with 2 and 3 beds.

Location: The project will take place in the small village of Manteigas, in the heart of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, a few kilometers from the highest point of Portugal, surrounded by unique landscapes.

Rebuilding spaces - imagining the future
      
Granja do Ulmeiro          September 7 - September 21, 2009

Preserving the natural and cultural patrimony of Lousa
      
Lousa          September 13 - September 27, 2009

Volunteer project: Lousã Association for Cooperation was established in 2000 with the main objective to support local community. Now the association carries out a lot of projects including youth participation project, children’s leisure time project and trainings for unemployed people. It’s the 3rd year that an international volunteer project will take place in Lousã.

The project's theme is related to environment and cultural patrimony and the general objective is to sensitize the community, citizens and institutions for the importance of Lousã patrimony preservation and invigoration.
Volunteers’ tasks will be: cleaning the nature house (old water mill); cleaning the tracks in the mountains; organizing cultural activities for the community; presenting their country; meeting with secondary school students. The volunteers will use different tools to clean the house and the mountain tracks.

Language: English

Free time activities: Visiting a water mill, visit to Coimbra and the university, going to the beach, visiting old villages, etc.

Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in a youth hostel.
