Support the daily operation of a Home for poor and destitute children

Catalca          May 24 - June 7, 2008

Volunteer project: The well known Turkish humorist-author Aziz Nesin whose books have been translated into 32 languages has established a foundation for taking care of children and supporting them from pre-school education until they graduate from university. Donations, copyrights and sale incomes of his books are the main sources of the foundation. Apart from supplying free of charge accommodation, food and education, the foundation is also keen of the social development of the children. Thus many different social, artistic and cultural activities are organized for the children. There's also a farm belonging to the foundation.

There are various tasks for the volunteers in this project. They will be directed by the staff to work on different fields daily. First of all, an old barn of the farm is going to be converted into an artist home, containing an atelier, a living room and a bedroom. Other activities during the project may be: feeding animals, helping in the kitchen, serving meals, general cleaning duties, painting and white washing, simple repairing works, garden landscaping, organizing social activities for the children, etc.

Language: English

Accommodation: In the dormitories of the foundation. 4-5 bedded rooms with common showers and toilets. Sleeping bags and mats are not necessary.

Location: The foundation is located in Catalca town, which is 1 hour from Istanbul.

Terminal: Istanbul

Age range: 18 and over

Aziz Nesin (1915-1995) was one of the most popular Turkish writers of all time. In 1972, he established the charitable Nesin Foundation, aiming not only to provide shelter, food and health support for children, but also proper education and professional training. The foundation, which is located in Catalca, a one hour drive from Istanbul, takes care of about 40 children.
The Home consists of several buildings. In the main building there are sleeping rooms, a kitchen, dining area, a large living room, a computer room, a little theatre with stage and auditorium, a library and two rooms which form a museum comprising memorabilia of Aziz Nesin. Other buildings comprise a craft area/atelier and stables for the animals. In front of the main entrance there is a playground – the rest of the land contains vegetable and fruit gardens. Some areas can be used for different purposes – the apple trees are surrounded by a lot of grass and make a good area for ball games. 1 km away from the main area a small farm is established with cows, chickens and ducks.

The children come from provinces all over Turkey. Some of them are orphans; some of them come from families with economic difficulties. The idea is to give those children a home – a home that resembles a family environment with all the love and care for each member, but with all responsibilities and duties at the same time. Their ages range from kindergarten children to university students. Older children often take responsibility for smaller children, so small family groups are formed. All of the children have daily duties, like helping in the household or in the garden or with the animals. Additionally, they are encouraged to pursue and develop their individual abilities. At the same time it is emphasized that excellence is something which does not just happen to be there, but which has to be achieved by constant work. Highly encouraged is the participation in creative activities, like conducting theatre plays, pottering, sculpturing and music.
