Volunteer opportunities in MEXICO

 

Reforestation of fire-damaged areas in Los Reyes
       Los Reyes, Michoacan          July 9 - July 28, 2008

Volunteer project: The local host is an institution that works toward the formation of youngsters in such fields as Computational Systems, Electro-mechanic engineering, Informatics BA and Administration, and organizes many activities for the integral development of the youth. The institute manages many ecological activities to promote awareness toward the environmental issues. Last year, there was a fire that destroyed the trees in the green areas of the ‘Santa Rosa’ hill. In this frame, a group of international volunteers is invited to participate, in cooperation with the local students, in different ecological activities, such as reforestation of the hill and intercultural exchange among the participants and the local people.

The volunteers will help in reforestation activities at the ‘Santa Rosa’ hill. They will work together with local students, in order to reach the daily goal of planting 8 trees per person. The group will also help to organize some cultural activities to promote the integration of the international volunteers with the local students.

Accommodation: Volunteers will be hosted in a house with all facilities at disposal (there are no beds, so please bring your sleeping bag and air mat).

Location: Los Reyes City was officially founded in 1954. However, this place had been existing since 1859, formerly known as “Villa de Salgado”. Los Reyes is the head city of the Municipality and the population is Mestiza (that means descendents from Spanish and Indigenous people). It is a very rich place for farmers and quite famous for many different fruit plantations (such as peaches, strawberries and blueberries). It is located very close to beautiful spots such as cascades and an extinct volcano called “Paricutin” that erupted 50 years ago, leaving only the ruins of Paricutin town, which can still be seen and visited, and they are one of the main touristic attractions in Michoacan state.

Environmental, renovation and cultural exchange activities with local students
       La Piedad, Michoacan          July 9 - July 28, 2008

Volunteer project: The local host is an institution which has as a main objective the promotion of multicultural cooperation. They want to host an international volunteer project in order to promote intercultural exchange among the volunteers and the local youngsters of the city. The participants in the project will organize interesting and nice activities promoting interaction with the youngsters through cultural, sports and social activities, which can also benefit the local inhabitants of the region.

The volunteers will help in the reforestation of a specific area inside the local university, as well as with the creation of special accesses for youngsters that use wheelchairs in the university. The volunteers will also help in the restoration and cleaning of historical monuments, will help to paint a house that is used as asylum and will help in the organization of workshops on intercultural learning with local youngsters. There are also activities planned in a local archaeological area in the surroundings of La Piedad city.

Maintenance of historical monuments in Morelia
       Morelia, Michoacan          
July 16 - August 4, 2008

Volunteer project: The institute for the youth development of the City of Morelia (IJUM) is a part of the local government which has been working with groups of international volunteers in the last 6 years. Together they have carried out many activities to promote the active participation of the local youngsters in the life of the communities. The groups of international volunteers have been involved in many activities with the youngsters of the city. In this project, the aim is to participate in activities related to children and the ancient Purepecha culture. Every summer, groups of children participate in many activities and workshops, coordinated and organized by the local government, such as sports, community projects, old traditions and cultures, etc.

The volunteers will be helping in the maintenance of historical monuments of Morelia city which is catalogued as part of the UNESCO Word Heritage. The volunteers will also participate in activities in local villages around the city, doing activities with children, restoring and painting buildings that are used for the benefit of the communities. Volunteers will help in cleaning campaigns and maintenance of public spaces, such as gardens and parks, and painting with local youngsters the basketball courts.

Language: The official language of the project is English. Some Spanish would be appreciated.

Accommodation: Volunteers will be hosted in a youth center with all facilities at disposal. Beds are provided, please bring your sleeping bag.

Founded almost 500 years ago, the city has a wonderful central zone with buildings dating back to the time of the Spanish conquest as well as all the more modern attributes (shops, bars cafés etc). The city's population is over 1 million and the climate is moderately warm, with daytime temperatures ranging from 20-35º C. Morelia is well connected to a variety of great places to visit, such as Pátzcuaro, and the ancient Purépecha capital Tzintzunzan.

Sea turtle preservation project on Isla de Pajaros
       Michigan, Guerrero          
July 16 - August 4, 2008

Volunteer project: In Mexico there are 5 different species of Marine Turtles that arrive to the Coasts and all of them are endangered. Many organizations and communities are working to protect these magic animals. Isla de Pajaros is a beautiful spot, close to nature, where a small community is settled and they started a program to protect the turtles. In this frame, a group of international volunteers is invited to participate in these activities and help in this wonderful program after the very good experiences in the past.

The aim of the project is to guarantee the preservation of the Marine Turtles that arrive to this zone through actions to protect the female turtles and their nests.
Day and night, the international volunteers will go to collect eggs and deliver them to the camp. Then, they will ensure that the female turtles return to the sea. Furthermore, they will not only put the eggs in the incubators and register data while others check the nests and register survival data, but will also release the baby turtles to the sea.
In addition, the volunteers will participate in workshops with other communities along the coast to speak about the importance of protecting the Marine Turtles.

Accommodation: The volunteers will be hosted in tents, so please bring your sleeping bag and air mat; it is basic, but functional. There is no hot water or electricity.

Location: Isla de Pajaros is an island, very close to the Mexican coast, specifically in Playa Michigan (Michigan Beach). It is very close to Tecpan de Galeana, a city on the coast, only 20 minutes from Isla de Pajaros. This is a marvelous spot with wonderful people living there and caring for the turtles.

Creating opportunities for sustainable development of indigenous communities in Mexico
       La Huacana, Michoacan

Volunteer project: The local host is an organization which works in many activities, such as cultural and environmental, to promote sustainable development and divulgate the richness of the indigenous communities in Mexico. In this project, a group of international volunteers is invited to participate in activities with the community called Mata de Platano, to help in a program that seeks to promote the creation of activities for sustainable development.

The volunteers will help in the construction and maintenance of a community center, called "La Casa del Volcan". The construction has already been started by the local people, but volunteers will help at the creation of a place that can receive tourists as a camping zone, since Mata de Platano is surrounded by very beautiful natural environment. Moreover, the group will gather some elements for the opening of a community museum.

Preserving endangered species and raising environmental awareness on the pacific coast of Mexico
       Lazaro Cardenas, Michoacan          August 6 - August 25, 2008

Volunteer project: The local host is the University of Lazaro Cardenas City, which mission is to form professionals with a sense of social compromise and service to the community, identified with the development of their region and the country, getting skills which cover wide range of competences. At the University, the students can choose among five Engineering and two Bachelor degrees, and be actively involved in cultural, sport, ecological, and social activities. The University runs many ecological activities to promote the awareness toward the environmental issues. In this frame, a group of international volunteers is invited to participate in different ecological and cultural activities with the students of the university. This project is aimed to promote the preservation of the ecological environment and to promote the intercultural exchange between the local students and the international volunteers.

Volunteers will participate in different activities, such as the creation of creative signs to promote messages motivating the local people to take care of the beach and not to throw garbage. Moreover, they will help at the maintenance of the ‘Iguanario’, which is a place to breed Green Iguanas (since they are endangered and they are an icon of the local fauna), and at the Marine turtle conservation in ‘Barra del Tigre’. Help in some cleaning activities is required as well. All the activities will be done together with local youngsters.

Location: Lazaro Cardenas is a city on the pacific coast of Mexico. It has 160,000 inhabitants and counts with all the modern services. It is located very close to beautiful places on the Mexican coast.

Reforestation and environmental awareness activities with students in Michoacan
       Morelia, Michoacan          August 6 - August 25, 2008

Volunteer project: The local host is an University in Michoacan, which offers three Bachelor programs, seven of Engineering, four of Master degree and one PHD. They work toward the formation of youngsters and organize many activities for the education of the youth. The university also manages many ecological activities to promote awareness toward the environmental issues. In this frame, a group of international volunteers is invited to participate in different ecological and cultural activities with the students of the university, after some years of successful projects in the campus.

The volunteers will help in activities to rescue some natural areas in the surroundings of the campus and the city, such as reforestation activities and help in the promotion of the sustainable tourism. The volunteers will participate in workshops and activities to promote the protection of the environment and awareness toward the voluntary service activities as a tool to help in the solution of these problems. Also, the volunteers will help in reforestation activities in an ecological ranch outside of Morelia city. This ranch is called the “La Planta” (the plant). It is a wonderful space where children of the city of Morelia can be close to nature and learn about the importance of taking care of the environment. At the university, the volunteers will make environmental signs to be placed in different areas of the campus and will also help in the reforestation of some green spaces.

Environmental education and reforestation work in the mountain town of Ciudad Hidalgo
       Ciudad Hidalgo, Michoacan          August 6 - August 25, 2008

Volunteer project: The local host, Cecytem School, is an educational institution which has four fields of studies: Mecatronics, Biotechnology, Informatics and Administration. Currently, there are 571 students at the campus, who will have technical career once they finish their studies, or the opportunity to study more in a professional frame. With various cultural, sport, ecological, youth, and artistic activities, the school looks for the integral development of its students.

The volunteers will reforest diverse zones of the campus and visit schools of the town to speak about the importance of nature. There will also be some informal language workshops, and all the activities will include students from the Cecytem School.

Renovating schools and improving access ways to rural villages in Michoacan

Support for poor communities in the region of Leon
       Leon, Guanajuato          August 13 -
September 1, 2008

Volunteer project: The local host is an educational institution that works towards the formation of youngsters and they organize many activities for the education of youth. They manage many ecological and social activities to promote awareness toward the environmental issues in the region, but also to promote the development of the local communities around as a contribution of the school to the improvement of the quality of life of the region where they work. A group of international volunteers is invited to participate in co-operation with the local students in different ecological and social activities in the campus and the surrounding communities.

The volunteers will help in reforestation activities inside the campus, and the collection of clothes and medicines to give to the inhabitants of the poor communities of the region. They will also organize a literacy campaign along with the local students.

Location: The city of León – officially named León de los Aldama – is the fifth most populous city in Mexico and the largest city in the state of Guanajuato. It is also the seat of León municipality. Also known as The Shoe Capital, it features large factories that not only produce shoes, but also boots, belts, jackets, and other leather accessories, serving both national and international markets.

Ecological and cultural activities with students in Zamora
       Zamora, Michoacan          August 13 -
September 1, 2008

Volunteer project: The Technological University of Zamora is an institution that works towards the formation of the youngsters and they organize many activities for the education of the youth. The university manages many ecological activities to promote awareness toward the environmental issues. A group of international volunteers is invited to participate in co-operation with the local students in different ecological and cultural activities. Volunteers are also invited to learn how to make traditional pottery handicrafts and also watch and play the “Juego de la Pelota Caliente” – Game of the fire ball – a pre-hispanic game of Mexican indigenous.

The volunteers will help in activities to improve the condition of the campus, such as maintenance of trees, reforestation activities and designing and making signs to set them at the green areas of the University.

Location: Zamora city was founded in 1574 by the King of Spain. Its official name is Zamora de Hidalgo which was the name given to the city after the Mexico Independence. It has a nice weather (not hot or cold) and it is a very rich region for farmers, very famous for its extraordinary strawberries.

Organizing sport events and protecting marine species in Cancun
       Cancun, Quintana Roo          August 13 -
September 1, 2008

Volunteer project: The local host of this project is a center that promotes social and sport activities in Cancun city. They realize over 34 cultural and sport activities with around 1,300 families in Cancun.
Cancun is a marvel of nature but the population is growing very rapidly. This is why it is very important to educate the children in environmental protection awareness and valorization of their local culture, history and roots. It is very important to create awareness that there is only one planet and to promote values such as flexibility, understanding other cultures, tolerance and team work. This project is organized with the aim to promote voluntary service activities among the children and adults through sports and cultural exchanges. A group of international volunteers is invited to help in the organization of sport events and also to participate in social activities to support the local native people of the Yucatan Peninsula. At the same time, the group will have the opportunity to experience and learn about the local culture, life of local people and the traditions of the Maya culture.

The international volunteers, along with local people, will organize sport events (aquatic sports, football) and will help in the coordination of the events and the participants. After the sport activities, volunteers will participate in a program for protection of the marine turtles and a special species of crab called “the blue crab” that is released in Cancun beaches to prevent its extinction. The participants will help by releasing and counting the baby turtles and help in the transportation of the blue crabs to the place where they are released. Besides these activities, the international team will also participate in reforestation activities in local communities and parks.

Accommodation: Volunteers will be hosted in the facilities of the sports club, with all facilities at disposal (kitchen, showers, bathrooms, air conditioning, etc.). Please bring your sleeping bag and air mat.

Location: Cancun is a coastal city in Mexico's easternmost state, Quintana Roo, on the Yucatán Peninsula, best known as the Mexican Caribbean.
