Street families rehabilitation program in Kibera, Africa's largest slum
       Kibera, Langata, Nairobi          March 5 - March 20, 2008

Volunteer project: The international volunteer project will be held in Nairobi City for 2 weeks. Volunteers will come together to demonstrate the power of voluntary service in meeting critical needs of the local communities. The main objectives of the international workcamp are: Income generation and HIV/AIDS outreach program.

This is a street families rehabilitation project, started in 2003 by Charles Ogutu. Initially the group used to advance loans to its members to do small business or assist their families but later they changed their focus to HIV/AIDS.
Volunteers will be working with the Haki Self group who are mostly Luo people - the largest tribe in Kenya, although there are also other ethnic groups residing within the area of Kibera. The local people are not well educated, especially the old generation, therefore some don't understand English, but local volunteers from the community are recruited to assist the international group with communication. Generally the people in this area are low income earners and live in poverty.
Kiswahili and Luo are the most spoken languages within the area. Kiswahili and English are spoken in the central business area and in Government offices, and are popular among the young professionals and educated youth.

Volunteer work: Volunteers will be involved in making jewelry and art work out of bone, providing home-based care to people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS, counseling, peer education and tuition.
The group will work 5 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon, Monday through Friday. Sometimes, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended.

Visits: Possibilities include:
• Nairobi National Museum
• Bomas of Kenya
• Kenya National Archive
• Community Church and members' houses
The visits will be organized during the weekends. Visits will be planned also to local schools and health centers.

Cultural exchange: There will be cultural presentations where all the volunteers will have an opportunity to present their countries and cultures. Volunteers will be free to choose presentation methods like story telling, singing, dancing, drama, speeches, etc.

Qualifications: No particular expertise or skills required. Participants should have a positive attitude, be ready to adopt and enjoy simple living conditions, be flexible and patient. However, specialized skills and expertise (such as experience in counseling, marketing and peer education) will be used accordingly.

Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in a house. There is electricity and pipe water/taps, but no shower at the accommodation.
Population pressure and scramble for resources is a key concern in this region. Volunteers are advised to ensure that drinking water is boiled to avoid bacterial infections.

Orientation: All volunteers will first meet in Nairobi for orientation. The volunteers are expected to arrive on March 5th. There will be an orientation meeting on March 6th. From Nairobi the volunteers will travel to the workcamp site in Nairobi province by local means of transport (public “matatu”). Departure will be on March 7th.

Location: Kibera is located in Nairobi province, about 20 km away from Nairobi. The workcamp site is located in Kibera, about 30 minutes drive from Nairobi City. Public transport is available. The closest hospital is within the camp site. Markets, Post Office, Banks (ATMs), Internet and other facilities are located in Nairobi.

The weather in Nairobi in March is hot, with little rain. During the day temperatures ranging between 25°C - 30°C and at night between 15°C - 19°C. The terrain is flat.

Age range: 20 and over

Cottage Industry program in Eastern province
       Manyatta, Embu, Eastern province          April 16 - May 8, 2008

Volunteer project: The international volunteer project will be held in Embu District for 3 weeks. Volunteers will come together to demonstrate the power of voluntary service in meeting critical needs of the local communities. The main objectives of the international workcamp is: Food Cottage Industry.

Volunteer work: The international volunteers will be helping in harvesting, preparation and processing of cassava, sweet potatoes and arrow root into crisps; making fireless gas cookers; and preparing seed beds and planting tree nurseries for sale. In the afternoon, the group will be visiting orphans and counseling the children.
The group will work 5 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon, Monday through Friday. Sometimes, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended.

Visits: Possibilities include:
• Keremeri Forest
• Thenge Njeru Waterfall
• Community members' houses
• Visiting orphans
The visits will be organized during the weekends.

Location: Embu is located in the Eastern province, about 140 km away from Nairobi. The project site is located in Ithithe, about 35 minutes drive from Embu town. Public transport is available. The closest Hospital is 5 minutes walk. Markets, Post Office, Banks (ATMs), Internet and other facilities are located in Embu town.

In April–May the weather is hot with long rains. During the day, temperatures ranging between 25°C - 30°C and at night between 15°C - 19°C. The terrain is hilly.

Income generation and adult education program in Nairobi
       Kariobangi, Embakasi, Nairobi          May 7 - May 22, 2008

Volunteer project: The international volunteer project will be held in Nairobi City for 2 weeks. Volunteers will come together to demonstrate the power of voluntary service in meeting critical needs of the local communities. The main objectives of the international workcamp is: Income generation.
This project is an income generating activity that the local people are undertaking to earn a living and maintain economic sustainability by selling sandals.

Volunteer work: The participants in this volunteer project will help with adult education program and making sandals. Volunteers will be involved in teaching the community marketing skills, accounting, shoe design and administration.
The group will work 5 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon, Monday through Friday. Sometimes, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended.

Visits: Possibilities include:
• Nairobi National Museum
• Bomas of Kenya
• Kenya National Archive
• Mamba Village
The visits will be organized during the weekends.

Art and environmental activities in Kitui District
       Mulango, Kitui, Eastern province          May 21 - June 12, 2008

Volunteer project: The international volunteer project will be held in Kitui District for 3 weeks. Volunteers will come together to help out in meeting critical needs of the local communities. The main objective of the volunteer project will be Art and Environment.

Sharpheads Arts Education and Environment Center (SAEEC) was founded in 2006 and registered under social services with the aim of bringing together self-help groups and individual businesses, in order to have a synergy effect on the community, rather than groups working individually. The Sharpheads youth group focuses on HIV/AIDS awareness, drug abuse, communal work and is affiliated with Arabia Mulango C.B.O which is concentrating on bee keeping and crafts. Subsequently, the members of the group got skills to run their own bee keeping activity. SAEEC was formed and registered as a community based organization and has several programs that focus on Orphans and Vulnerable Children, Creative Arts, Youth Counseling, Rehabilitation and entrepreneurship and Environment.

Volunteer work: Volunteers will be involved in vegetable growing, bee keeping, creative arts (poetry, dances, theatre), raising awareness on HIV/AIDS and malaria in schools, environmental work such as tree planting, garbage collection, clean-ups.
The group will work 5 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon, Monday through Friday. Sometimes, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended.

Visits: Possibilities include:

Orientation: All volunteers will first meet in Nairobi for orientation. They are expected to arrive on May 21st. There will be an orientation meeting on May 22nd. From Nairobi the volunteers will travel to the workcamp site in Kitui district by local means of transport (public “matatu”). Departure will be on May 23rd.

Location: Kitui is located in the Eastern Province, about 150 km away from Nairobi.
The closest hospital is 2 km from the campsite. Market (there is a trading centre within the school), Post Offices, Banks (ATMs), Internet and other facilities are located 2 km from Kitui District.

In May-June the temperatures range from 22°C - 30°C during the day, and at night between 15°C - 17°C. The terrain is hilly.

Promoting girls' rights and HIV/AIDS awareness in Rift Valley province
       Isinya, Kajiado, Rift Valley province          June 4 - June 26, 2008
 
     Isinya, Kajiado, Rift Valley province          September 3 - September 18, 2008

Volunteer project: The international volunteer project will be held in Kajiado District for 3 weeks. Volunteers will come together to help out in meeting critical needs of the local communities. The main objective of the volunteer project is Income generation.
The international volunteer group will be involved in Handicraft activities, Female Genital Mutilation advocacy, HIV/AIDS outreach program.

Volunteer work: The volunteers will help making and selling bead work, advocating for girl child education, and will organize HIV/AIDS awareness activities.
The group will work 5 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon, Monday through Friday. Sometimes, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended.

Visits: Possibilities include:
• Ostrich Farm (4 km)
• Rangers Resort
The visits will be organized during the weekends.

Location: Isinya is located in the Rift Valley province, about 60 km away from Nairobi.
The project in June is based in Olturoto, about 7 km from Isinya Center. Public transport is available. The closest hospital is 7 km away.
The September project is based in Isinya town. Public transport is available. The closest hospital is 100 metres away.
Markets, Post Office, Banks (ATMs), Internet and other facilities are located in Athi River and Kitengela, 20-30 minutes drive from the camp sites.

During the day temperatures range between 19°C - 21°C and at night between 15°C - 19°C. The terrain is flat and high, this is a semi-arid area.

       Katangi, Machakos, Eastern province          June 18 - July 10, 2008

Volunteer project: The international volunteer project will be held in Machakos District for 3 weeks. Volunteers will come together to demonstrate the power of voluntary service in meeting critical needs of the local communities. The main objective of the volunteer project is Children's Welfare.

Volunteer work: The volunteers will be involved in teaching, counseling, playing, cooking and feeding children in a children's home. They will also assist in the day-to-day co-ordination of the Home.
The group will work 5 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon, Monday through Friday. Sometimes, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended.

Visits: Possibilities include:
• Kyamwilu (an area where there is gravitational pull)
• Satellite
• Wanyavu (where wood carving is done)
• Machakos town

Teaching and recreational activities for mentally handicapped children in Mombasa
       Kisauni, Mombasa, Coast province          July 2 - July 24, 2008

Volunteer project: The international volunteer project will be held in Mombasa for 3 weeks. Volunteers will come together to demonstrate the power of voluntary service in meeting critical needs of the local communities. The main objective of the volunteer project is Mentally Handicapped Children's Welfare.

Volunteer work: The volunteers will be involved in teaching, counseling, playing, cooking, physiotherapy activities and feeding kids in a Home for mentally handicapped children. They will also assist in the day-to-day co-ordination of the Home to ensure efficient operation.
The group will work 5 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon, Monday through Friday. Sometimes, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended.

Visits: Possibilities include:
• Fort Jesus Historical Museum
• Bamburi Nature trail

Poverty reduction project in Nyando district
       Nyakach, Nyando, Nyanza province          July 23 - August 14, 2008

Volunteer project: The international volunteer project will be held in Nyando district for 3 weeks. Volunteers will come together to help out in meeting critical needs of the local communities. The main objective of the international workcamp is Poverty reduction.

Oywa “A” Solar Support group was started 4 years ago by Solar Cookers International. The indigenous people of this area are the “Luo” ethnic group. The volunteer project involves Solar Cookers training, making and selling. We are inviting volunteers to come and assist Oywa “A” Solar Support group to achieve their project.

The local people are not well educated, especially the old generation, therefore some do not understand English, but local volunteers from the community will be assisting the volunteers with communication. The community has rich culture and traditions and very friendly people.

Volunteer work: Volunteers will be involved in training, making and selling of solar cookers.
The group will work 5 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon, Monday through Friday. Sometimes, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended.

The weather in July-August is generally hot and rainy. During the day temperatures ranging between 25°C - 28°C and at night between 17°C - 19°C. The terrain is low and flat.

Promoting beekeeping as a means of increasing economic self-reliance in rural areas
       Manyatta, Embu, Eastern province          August 20 - September 11, 2008

Volunteer project: The international volunteer project will be held in Embu District for 3 weeks. Volunteers will come together to demonstrate the power of voluntary service in meeting critical needs of the local communities. The main objectives of the international workcamp is: Bee Keeping.

Volunteer work: The volunteers will be helping in honey processing, putting up the hives, using the by-product i.e. wax to make candles and other products. The participants will be also involved in HIV/AIDS awareness activities, as well as sale, packaging and marketing of honey.
The group will work 5 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon, Monday through Friday. Sometimes, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended.

Environmental conservation and adult education program in Kitui District
       Mulango, Kitui, Eastern province          October 22 - November 13, 2008

Volunteer project: The international volunteer project will be held in Kitui for 3 weeks. Volunteers will come together to demonstrate the power of voluntary service in meeting critical needs of the local communities. The main objective of the volunteer project is Environmental conservation, Adult education and Art.

Volunteer work: The volunteers in this project will be involved in adult education, decorating of “Kyondo” African handbags and tree planting. The volunteers will help with garbage collection, tree planting and sensitizing the people from the local community about environmental issues.
The group will work 5 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon, Monday through Friday. Sometimes, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended.

Volunteer project: The international volunteer project will be held in Kisumu City for 3 weeks. Volunteers will come together to demonstrate the power of voluntary service in meeting critical needs of the local communities. The main objective of the volunteer project is Poverty reduction and HIV/AIDS awareness.

Volunteer work: The volunteers will be involved in cultivation, harvesting and selling tomatoes, and also in HIV/AIDS awareness and outreach program. The group will also take part in a training, making and selling of solar cookers.
The group will work 5 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon, Monday through Friday. Sometimes, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended.

Visits: Possibilities include:

• Ahero irrigation scheme

Volunteer project: The international volunteer project will be held in Mombasa for 3 weeks. The main objective of the volunteer project is Education and Income generation activities.

Volunteer work: The international volunteers will be involved in informal education activities for local adults, as well as baking, packing and selling of doughnuts and cakes, collecting garbage and tailoring.
The group will work 5 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon, Monday through Friday. Sometimes, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended.

       Machakos, Eastern province          December 3 - December 25, 2008

Volunteer project: The international volunteer project will be held in Machakos District for 3 weeks. Volunteers will come together to demonstrate the power of voluntary service in meeting critical needs of the local communities. The main objective of the volunteer project is Environmental conservation.

Volunteer work: The volunteers in this project will be involved in planting trees, designing brochures, teaching the local people finance and management. The program aims to raise awareness and sensitize people on environmental issues and to improve the eco-system of the town by planting trees.
The volunteers will be involved in preparing nurseries, seedbeds, weeding, watering, picking soil, planting trees by the river “Iyeni”, designing brochures, selling tree seedlings, teaching finance and administration.
The group will work 5 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon, Monday through Friday. Sometimes, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended.

Visits: Possibilities include:
• Kyamwilu (an area where there is gravitational pull)

• Wanyavu (where wood carving is done)

Volunteer project: The international volunteer project will be held in Embu District for 3 weeks. Volunteers will come together to demonstrate the power of voluntary service in meeting critical needs of the local communities. The main objective of the international volunteer project is Adult Education.

Volunteer work: As part of the Adult Education program, the volunteers will be teaching adults reading, writing and numerical skills. The program is initiated by adult education department under social services and the aim is to raise the literacy level in this area. The group will be involved with the adult education activities in the afternoon hours. In the morning, the volunteers will be counseling and playing with children.
The group will work 5 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon, Monday through Friday. Sometimes, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended.

The project involves Precast building works and Selling building materials. Volunteers will be involved in making and selling of building materials, including concrete mixing, mould building, administration, management and marketing.
